Author's Note: First Letter I got done for the Covert Affairs Alphabet Challenge. Fleet Week in NYC is a pretty awesome yearly event and lemme tell you thousands of sailors and Marines walking around…yeah. When I saw N is for New York, I knew I had to use Fleet Week as the basis. It’s already passed for this year, but if you get the chance please attend or at least support our guys and girls in the military. If nothing else, visit the Intrepid who has returned to her berth on the Hudson.

“Close your mouth, Annie, and wipe the drool off your chin.” Auggie’s voice in her ear carried the smirk she was sure his face held.

“I am not drooling,” she huffed. “I have seen men in uniform before.”

“But surely not this many in one place,” he teased. “And those whites sure are blinding.”

“You don’t think I’ve seen Fleet Week before?” she replied, scanning the crowd around her.

“Well, I wouldn’t know, Walker. We’ve never discussed…” he trailed off as he realized he’d lost her. “Annie?” he questioned.

“Hang on, Auggie,” she murmured. She reached up and clicked the Bluetooth over so Auggie could monitor the conversation, but she wouldn’t hear him unless she flipped it back over. She’d caught sight of a young man strolling in her direction, a red rose clutched tightly in his hand. Since her contact was supposed to present her with that, she had hopes that’s who was approaching her now. “Possible contact,” she added to explain why she’d cut him off so abruptly, then went silent as she turned her attention to the cup of tea on the table in front of her.

She’d attracted some attention from the sailors strolling by, but most of them had nodded at her and called ‘ma’am’ if anything before moving on. She’d waved back to the ones who’d acknowledged her, but hadn’t moved from her spot. In her time with the CIA, simple brush passes had been anything but. She had hopes though that since she was on US soil and meeting someone in the military that this would go off without a hitch.

A hand appeared in her field of vision, the single rose almost brushing her nose. “The rose doesn’t compare to your beauty, but will you allow me to gift you with it?” a voice asked.

Turning her head, Annie smiled up at the young sailor who was holding it. “It would be my honor. Would you like to join me?”

“Thank you, ma’am,” the sailor responded. He took the seat she indicated and smiled at her. “I’m Stefan,” he added.

“Annie. Are you in the city for Fleet Week?” She tried to act casual, but so far he had given her the correct identifiers and she was anxious to have him pass her what he had.

“I am.” He nodded his thanks at the glass of water the waitress brought over, but didn’t order anything else. Sliding the rose across the table to her, he tapped the packaging, indicating she should look at it. “It’s my first time in the city,” he continued as she picked up the rose.

He rambled on as she smelled the flower, then examined the wrapping; finding a small SD card tucked inside. Slipping her phone out of her pocket, but being careful to keep it out of sight, she stuck the card into the reader. She smiled at the sailor as she tucked her hand under her hair and turned the Bluetooth back on. “Hey, Auggie? Card’s in my phone.” She spoke in a low voice so it wouldn’t carry beyond the table.

The click of keys came over the connection. “Got it. Downloading now. Good work, Annie. Keep chatting with him for another moment.”

She smiled at the sailor, encouraging him to continue telling her about the places he had been and filling in with stories about her own adventures as Auggie hummed Mingus in her ear and keys clicked rapidly. It seemed like this pass was going to go off without a hitch. “Are you sure you don’t want anything to drink?” she asked when there was a break in the conversation.

“No, ma’am,” he answered. “I’m fine. It really is just a pleasure to sit and speak with you.”

“Got it all, Annie,” Auggie’s voice said at that moment. “And I wiped the card. Go ahead and give it back to him.”

Palming the card, she reached out towards Stefan, clasping his hand. “You’re a brave young man to serve your country. Thank you for that. I’ve really enjoyed talking with you, but unfortunately, I have to get to a meeting.”

“Well, thank you for taking time out of your day to chat with me,” he responded, standing as she did. “You don’t know what it means to me.”

She smiled softly at him. “Yes, I sort of think I do.” With one last squeeze to his hand, she dropped it, leaving the card in his palm. “Stay safe and thank you again.” Turning she slid her bag over her shoulder and walked away. “Went off without a hitch, Auggie,” she said quietly as she joined the flow of pedestrians.

“See?” he commented. “Sometimes a simple brush pass really is just a simple brush pass.”

“I’ll see you when I get back,” she responded, ignoring his comment and clicking the phone off. Maybe sometimes her job wasn’t all adrenaline fueled chaos, maybe sometimes it really was just a quiet conversation at a bistro.

I saw "Fleet Week" and HAD to read. YAY for a challenge entry, and YAY for an awesome little story! I love the premise, and that closing bit about the job sometimes being a quiet conversation in a bistro is great. Nice job!

I love Fleet Week. I rarely get to actually go into the City for it...but its so much fun. And I thought the perfect cover for a pass. And honestly--every thing cannot always go wrong with her job. Thank you for the compliments!

I have one other started. It'll be pre-series...but it fits under about 5 letters so I have to figure out exactly which letter it's gonna go under. Plus for about 6 days...it was 700+ words of plotless snark. I did finally figure out an actual plot for it though and it has the bonus of Auggie in the military. It's also a crossover and I haven't quite gotten a grasp on the other half of the crossover since it's a brand new fandom. Plus I'm playing fast and loose with that series's time line.

*giggles* Seriously...I had to stop writing it because I was like...they cannot just stand around snarking at each other. It's fun...but there' NO point!

HOOAH! *giggles insanely* I spent like 20 minutes one day trying to explain what exactly that meant to someone...and finally just said "It means everything except NO."

There just needs to be more military!Auggie in the world. And now that I have a plot...I can do something about it.

Maybe not tonight though...I'm not sure yet what I'm doing.

that was good, don't often read stories where everything goes to plan, what is Fleet Week? we don't have that in New Zealand.

Thanks. And yeah that's why I decided to go this way...with just something simple and easy where everything does go according to plan.

Fleet Week is an annual event in NYC where the Navy, Marines, and Coast Guard get to visit the city. They tour and also do demonstrations for people. Its a lot of fun because you can visit with current military people and thank them for their services. Plus you can see the ships that are in active service. Its been expanded now to other cities. Anyway there's a link in the author's note to information about Fleet Week plus the Intrepid which is a former Navy ship that's docked on the Hudson.

It is. I've been to the Intrepid, but haven't been to Fleet Week since I was really, really young. It is kinda epic though.

Not my fault...

It does really sound awesome. I've never actually gotten to go into NYC during it. I always seem to be out of town.
