Written as an answer to
azziria 's prompt of Danny/Steve, tattoo; Danny gets a tattoo (any rating) for
kinkme_h50 .
Final rating PG-13. Sooo not what I was intending when I started this...
Of all the things Steve would have expected to learn when he started sleeping with Danny Williams, what he had just revealed was not it. Their first few times had been hurried, almost fugitive in nature, barely making it through the door of whomever’s house they had chosen before they succumbed to hormones and not really even getting their clothes off. Sometimes it had even been the adrenaline from surviving whatever harebrained stunt Steve had pulled to save their asses (in his view) or attempt to kill them (in Danny’s view) that had caused the lack of control. They fell into bed afterwards—too tired and fucked out to worry about getting undressed. And in the morning they were often in a rush to get to work again. So actually taking their time and getting all their clothes off, wasn’t really something either of them had either considered.
They’d managed to not only catch their bad guy today, but not get shot at (which Danny kept trying to write on the calendar since he said it would probably never happen again), so neither one of them were on an adrenaline high. As they finished up the paperwork (really Danny finished up the paperwork and Steve tried to think of ways to bug him that wouldn’t annoy him completely), Steve leaned closer. “What are you doing tonight?”
Danny looked up from where he’d been attempting to convince the computer that their prep’s name really was Jakkob Jingler. “Going home. Eating dinner. Sleeping. Rachel has Grace for the weekend so…” he shrugged.
“Wanna come over?”
“For?” Danny made a noise of triumph as the computer accepted his commands and devoted his full attention to Steve, who wore a very familiar expression. “Oh.”
“So?” Steve was not unlike a child with a favorite toy and sometimes Danny felt like the new one Steve had gotten for his birthday. “With dinner and everything,” he added after a minute. “I swear.”
Danny finished the last of his report as he considered Steve’s offer. “Yeah, okay,” he finally decided. If nothing else, Steve’s house was nicer than his rathole of a rental.
After dinner, Danny wandered out onto the patio while Steve cleaned up the kitchen. He’d attempted to help, but his standards had been woefully low compared to Steve’s and it had just been frustrating the other man. Even after sundown, it was still well above eighty and Danny undid the buttons on his shirt before stripping it off and tossing it on one of the deck chairs. For a few minutes, he just stood staring out across the sand and water, not really thinking about anything.
The sound of the screen sliding open behind him was loud enough that he wasn’t startled when Steve’s arms wrapped around his waist from behind. “Hey,” Steve said quietly, almost as if he didn’t want to break the spell the view had wrought on Danny. “You okay?”
“Fine. You done with the dishes?” Danny leaned back into his embrace, letting Steve take his weight.
Steve nodded, intending to turn Danny in his arms. He got the smaller man turned partway when something caught his eye. “What’s this?” he asked. Unable to see it in the light spilling from the door, he attempted to drag Danny closer to the doorway.
“Hey! Hey! Not a chew toy!” Danny protested, attempting to wrench himself out of Steve’s grasp. “What the hell, man?”
“What’s on your arm? Did you get hurt today and not tell me?” Steve demanded.
“Damn it, I’m fine, Steve!” Danny dug his feet in and pulled in the opposite direction, finally stopping his forward momentum.
Steve came back towards him, reaching out to attempt to trace what was on Danny’s arm. “What?” His hand dropped away as Danny glared at him.
“It’s a tattoo, Steve,” Danny replied in the tone of voice that told him what an idiot he was being.
“Why haven’t I…Can I see it?”
Danny pointed towards the house without answering, and then grabbed his shirt, following Steve as he went inside. In the kitchen, Danny turned so Steve could see his shoulder; holding his shirt in case he had to make a quick exit. “You haven’t seen it because I haven’t had my shirt off when we’ve been working and when you might have had an opportunity, we’ve been a little busy.”
Steve ignored Danny’s voice and concentrated on the ink embedded in his skin; stepping close and tracing it with a reverent finger. Unlike his own tattoos, which had been picked for the colors and the time period when he was at his most rebellious, Danny’s was all black and simple. After a moment, he also realized it was deeply meaningful to the other man. “It’s Grace’s, isn’t it?” he asked softly.
Danny nodded, relaxing under Steve’s touch. “Her name, birth date, and handprint. After…” he breathed deeply. “After she was born, all I could think about was how I was entrusted with this life, this little girl, and she was the most precious thing to me. But…she wasn’t always going to be that little and I wasn’t always going to be able to protect her…”
“To remind yourself…?” Steve questioned.
“That even if I can’t protect her, I still need to be there for her. That I’m still her ‘Danno’.”
“Hey,” Steve said quietly, sensing that Danny’s memories have gone somewhere he can’t follow. “Grace knows you love her madly. Now come on.” He tugged on the other man’s hand. “Let’s go to bed.”
“Steve, I’m not really…”
“We both need to sleep, Danny,” Steve replied. “We both need to sleep.” He nudged Danny in the direction of the bedroom. “Go on. I’m gonna lock up.” When he entered his bedroom a few minutes later, he found Danny curled up on his side, eyes closed. Lying down behind him, he asked, “Do you want to call Grace?”
“Not like Rachel’ll let me talk to her,” Danny mumbled in reply.
Checking the time, Steve decided he could risk alienating Danny’s ex-wife a little more. Picking up his cell phone, he dialed the number and cut her off before she could start bitching him out. “Ma’am, this is Commander McGarrett. Put Grace on,” he ordered. “No, Danny isn’t hurt, but he needs to talk to his daughter for a few minutes.” When she started to protest, he cut her off again, “I really don’t give a damn. Just give her the phone.”
A moment later, the young voice of Grace Williams came on the line. “Steve? Is Danno okay?”
“He’s fine,” Steve replied. The young girl still made him feel a bit awkward, but he was willing to try for Danny. “He just wanted to say good-night.” Nudging Danny to get his attention, he handed him the phone. “Talk to her,” he whispered.
Danny took the phone and grabbed Steve’s hand, keeping him there when the other man tried to leave. As he spoke softly to his daughter, Steve settled back in behind him. Maybe it wasn’t how he’d planned for the night to end, but he couldn’t be upset about what he’d discovered.

22/10/10 02:04 (UTC)Yes, I figured any tattoo Danny has/had it would have something to do with Grace.

22/10/10 02:51 (UTC)Steve is just totally bad-ass and Danny is just so adorable in this fic. It's nice to see his emotional side when it comes to Grace.

22/10/10 02:55 (UTC)I think even with kids Steve would be totally bad-ass and woe to the person that hurts someone he cares about (can't wait to see the fallout from Mary and the toolbox). Yes, Danny is more in touch with his emotional side than we give him credit for, but I do believe he would be more dangerous than Steve if someone threatened Grace.

22/10/10 03:56 (UTC)Danny would totally be more dangerous than Steve when it comes to Grace being threatened. It's his daughter, after all. XD Though, if Steve had a kid, he'd be like 1000x more dangerous than any father who had a shotgun in one hand and a bottle of whiskey in the other (idk why that sounds like a good analogy to me, but whatevs. lol)

Oh yeah but what I was trying to say is everyone looks at Steve as the dangerous one...ex-military, ex-SEAL, but I would totally not want to get in the way of Danny if someone messed with Grace and I do not think even Steve could slow him down. Make sense now? And yes, Steve would totally come down like a rain of fire on anyone that messed with a kid of his.

22/10/10 04:55 (UTC)Plus I have no Hawaii Five-O caps to make icons yet and so far the ones I've seen are...meh okay but not everything I'm looking for. I guess I'll have to search harder for caps over the weekend or something because I'm sure I'm going to be either cleaning out more of the basement tomorrow or off on errands.

22/10/10 16:06 (UTC)Steve is very clumsy with his affections, but he did the absolute right thing there.
Have I mentioned how pleasantly surprised I am at how Scott Caan is totally rocking the dad thing on 5-0? This is the first role I've ever seen him play something other than an eternal fratboy ass.

22/10/10 17:00 (UTC)No you haven't, but yes I agree. He's growing up. And he and the little girl they have playing Grace are absolutely freaking adorable together. One of my favorite scenes is the one where he goes to Rachel's house and lays out the days, hours, minutes of actual face time he gets with Grace. My heart just breaks for him because you can tell that he'll do whatever he has to to get and have those few precious minutes (and I totally think his inner guy is shuddering when Grace tells him she wants a PINK football for her birthday). I hope we get more moments with the two of them.

24/10/10 18:29 (UTC)LOL that was done very, very quickly because I wrote a Losers story and needed an icon to go with it. And then I just kinda loved it...so I've never changed it. He's so much fun :-) Like I literally did the icon in about 2 minutes.

11/11/10 18:42 (UTC)I like how you set up how passionate the McDanno are but then you also showed just how protective Steve is and the imagery of him trying to manhandle Danny makes me smile because there is no way Danny wouldn't fight back.
And good for Steve for realizing that Danny would need to speak to Grace--Good man.

11/11/10 19:54 (UTC)Steve is a lot deeper than anyone gives him credit for. And Danny is a lot tougher than everyone credits him...trust me, I'm related to guys like him--smaller does not mean weaker.
Glad you enjoyed.
