usanetwork_las and since the voting is now over I can post this. I’ve moved on to round two so y’all can vote again once voting opens. I’m not allowed to tell you which story is mine, but I am allowed to tell you to go vote for whatever story you think is the best. Stories have to be in by Oct. 6th so voting will start soon after that.
He was running out of time.
Nimble fingers flew across the keyboard while the other hand followed his progress on the Braille reader. Coding flowed from his computer up to the screens. His headphones hung forgotten around his neck, sounds issuing from them. He’d waited until the other techs had left for the day before slaving the other screens to his computer so that he had a larger playground. One screen held the coding that he was running through, making the screens jump and change quickly. It had taken him a few weeks (and a little judicious hacking to change the coding) so he could follow the game, but now he had the time to actually enjoy himself. Unfortunately he was on a game clock now.
Figures whirled and dived before him, the colors flashing across his face. Sightless eyes stared straight ahead as the visuals changed and his avatar ran down a long hallway. A robe flowed out behind him as the man leaped into the air, executing a mid-air flip. A snap-hiss, familiar to most geeks, echoed through the room and Auggie grinned gleefully as the enemies fell beneath his avatar’s blade. “The Force is with me,” he intoned, stabbing the attack button viciously.
The droids died in a fiery burst of sparks and explosions as Auggie cackled. A beep signaled that he had made it through the level before his time ran out and he leaned back in his chair to stretch for a moment before tackling the next round.
The opening of the door behind him froze him in place for a moment, but he relaxed as the scent of Jo Malone’s Grapefruit wafted towards him. “What are you doing here so late?” he asked as he inputted the codes to enter the next level.
“I could ask you the same thing,” Annie replied as she perched herself on the edge of his desk.
He shrugged, checking the hacking he’d done and noting that someone had tweaked his codes a bit. “Just finishing up some work,” he commented with a smile.
Annie turned her head to look at the screens. “Auggie? Are you using CIA resources to play a video game?”
