Duke frowned as yet another person paused after they walked past him, turning to look at his back. After a minute he shrugged and continued walking, heading towards the bakery which had been his destination from the beginning. He didn’t normally get up this early in the morning, but after everything that had happened in the last few days he didn’t want to be in any of his usual haunts.

A few feet farther and someone else was turning to look back at him after they had walked past. “Okay. Do I have my shirt on inside out or something?” Duke demanded.

“No. Of course not,” the girl responded. She grinned at Duke. “Not at all.” With another grin, she continued on her way.

Duke shook his head. “Haven is a weird place.”

A familiar blue truck was parked outside the bakery when Duke exited it a few minutes later. He sauntered up to the driver’s side, since it was parked facing the wrong direction, and leaned against the truck. “Bearclaw?” he offered.

“Really, Duke?” Nathan replied.

Duke shrugged. “Cops like donuts, right? Bearclaws are like the ultimate donut.”

Nathan shook his head, the corners of his mouth turning up. “Sometimes I wonder where your brain goes.”

“So what brings you down here, Chief Wuornos?” Duke asked, shifting his position on the truck. “Something going down?”

“Seems I have a little bit of mayhem going on downtown,” Nathan told him.

Duke looked around, scanning the seemingly quiet streets. “Um. Someone’s anticipating trouble now?”

"No one is exactly anticipating trouble... Just warning that someone is in town," Nathan replied.

"Nathan, what are you talking about?" Duke asked.

Nathan made a motion, indicating the back of Duke's shirt. "Check out your shirt."

Duke shrugged his over shirt off, turning it around so he could see. "Hello my name is Mayhem, please tell Wuornos I'm loose in the city," he read. "What the... Audrey."

Nathan chuckled. "Gotta admit its kinda funny."

"You would think so. That explains all the looks this morning."

Nathan nodded towards his truck. "Come on. I'll run you to the boat or back to the Gull."

Duke frowned. “Why? Because I’m gonna cause ‘mayhem’? I can manage to get myself back to my place. Thanks anyway.”

Nathan reached out and caught Duke’s hand before the other man could pull away. “No. Because I want to.”

The look Duke turned on him now was suspicious, but he nodded reluctantly. “Fine. I need to head up to the Gull. My morning guy called out.”

“Hop in then,” Nathan said. “It’s not a problem.”

Duke made his way around the truck, swinging into the passenger seat. “You know you don’t have to drive me up there.”

“I want to,” Nathan answered as he put the truck into gear.

He headed up the mountain towards the Gull, neither of them saying anything as Nathan took the curves carefully. About halfway up, Nathan pulled over, putting the truck into park and turning to look at Duke. “What?” the darker haired man asked after a minute.

“I’m the sullen, stubborn bastard, Duke, why are you acting like me?”

“I’m not! Where did you get that idea?”

“Stalking around town like something bit you in the ass?”

Duke opened his mouth to protest and realized he couldn’t. He ran a hand through his hair. “I don’t know what you want me to say, Nate.”

“I want you to say whatever’s bothering you. Whatever’s on your mind. Because something clearly is.”

“I want to know why you won’t claim me,” Duke blurted out after a minute of just staring at Nathan.

“Why I won’t… What?!” Nathan demanded.

“You always. You don’t want me. You leave as soon as Audrey does if not before. You call her mine. But you never…” Duke shook his head. “I know you don’t really want me.” When Nathan didn’t say anything after a few minutes, Duke said, “Yeah that’s what I thought. Thanks for the ride, but I’ll just walk the rest of the way.”

Nathan slid across the seat, almost lunging at Duke, and grabbed at the darker haired man. Duke winced as Nathan’s fingers dug into his skin. “Duke, wait.”

“I think you’ve not said more than enough, Wuornos,” Duke almost snarled.

“You’re right because you haven’t given me a chance to speak.” Nathan just looked at him for a moment, then continued on, “I don’t know where you got the idea I don’t want you. Duke. I have always wanted you.”

“What…” Duke stopped trying to get away, pulling the door shut again so he didn’t fall out of the truck if Nathan let him go.

“I have always wanted you,” Nathan repeated.

“Really? Then what the fuck, Nathan?!”

Nathan sighed. “We have so much history. Sometimes I’m not sure you want me. I just don’t want to push you, Duke. I never wanted you to feel like I was pushing you into something you didn’t want.”

“Have you ever known me to do something I don’t want, Nathan?”

“No,” Nathan whispered. “No, you haven’t.”

“Then why would I do this if I didn’t want it?”

“You wouldn’t,” Nathan admitted. “But don’t you get it?” he continued. “I want you. You’ve always been the bad boy. The one I’m not supposed to want. The one who tormented me and no one would think I wanted him.” Nathan reached out and ran a finger down the side of Duke’s face, even though he couldn’t feel it, he knew Duke could. “Even though I always have.”

“Then why, Nate?”

“Because having you and Audrey.” Nathan shook his head. “I don’t deserve both of you.”

Duke snorted. “Are you kidding? You’re Mr. Perfect.” He considered Nathan for a minute. “Of course you’re also stubborn and annoying and…”

Nathan leaned across the distance between them and cut Duke’s words off with a kiss. “You suck at reassurance,” he informed Duke when he pulled back.

“Got you to think of something else, didn’t I?” Duke replied.

“Is that what this was?” Nathan asked.

“No,” Duke said honestly. “You really are perfect. At least I always thought you were.”

Nathan shook his head. “I’m far from perfect.”

Duke wrapped his hand around the back of Nathan’s neck, pulling him closer again. “Yes. You. Are. You are perfect for us.”

Nathan smiled as he pressed his forehead against Duke’s. “You’re crazy.”

“Proud of it, Chief,” Duke replied, his own smirk breaking out.

Nathan toyed with the necklaces on the chains around Duke’s neck, running his fingers over the pendants. “Is this one new?” he asked, pulling one of them free.

Duke shrugged easily. “Sorta? It seemed like… I wanted it. No one will see it.”

Nathan pulled back, lifting the round disc so he could see it. “If lost return to Nathan Wuornos.” He grinned. “Does this make you my pirate then?”

“I’m an honest citizen, Nathan.” Duke smirked. “But… Yeah. Something like that.”
