“Hi,” an arm slid around her waist as someone spoke right next to her ear. “Don’t taze me and smile like you’re happy to see me.”

Darcy glanced to her right, a smile spreading across her face. “Why wouldn’t I be happy to see you? Although starting a conversation that way almost makes me want to taze you just for fun.”

“Yeah. Cute.” Will’s smile was more of a grimace than an actual smile, but he kept moving with her. “You’re a laugh riot. Can we keep moving?”

“Where are we going?” she asked. “Don’t you have like a team or something? People you’re supposed to be with?”

Will glanced over his shoulder. “Yeah they’re a little busy now.” He tried to steer her towards the door. “Could we please?”

“Don’t see what the problem is,” Darcy complained as Will hustled her through the doorway. “It figures a nice small town, I’d run into some sort of trouble. All I wanted was a nice, quiet, simple few days away from the insanity that is New York. And I run into you.”

“Move a little faster, Lewis,” Will responded. “Hunt’s about to do something insane.”

“I do not get paid enough to deal for your insanity and the Avengers!” Darcy called, even as Will gave up all pretense of being friendly with her and grabbed her by the arm, pulling her away from the building.

Just as they cleared the street, there was a rumble and the building behind them swayed. Will pushed Darcy down, covering her body with his. “Get down!” he yelled.

“What the hell?!” Darcy yelped as she fell to the ground. Behind them, the building rumbled but didn’t fall. “Seriously. Do not get paid enough,” Darcy complained as she sat back up. “What was that?”

“Classified, but please thank Mr. Stark the next time you see him.” Will pulled her to her feet. “Come on. We gotta get out of here before the cops show up.”

Darcy pointed a finger at him. “Will, you got some serious ‘splainin’ to do, Mister.”

“Yeah, fine, whatever. But, come on. Your fancy badge isn’t gonna help us this time.” Will tugged on her hand, pulling her away.

Darcy allowed Will to herd her into a ramshackle building, holding back her protests. As they entered a room in the back of the building, he asked, “Are you injured?”

“No, I’m not. I’m fine. What the hell was all that?” she demanded.

“Slight disagreement,” Will answered.

“Nooo, a slight disagreement is a Black Widow and Hawkeye sparring session. That was more on par with the Hulk/Thor helicarrier throw down,” she argued.

“It wasn’t that bad,” Will replied. “I’ve read the report.”

“I didn’t know your clearance went that high.” Darcy crossed her arms. “What is going on? Why are you guys here? And please, tell me Hunt did not just blow up a random building.”

“No. That was definitely the target. And not so much blew it up as took out a few select floors.”

“Let’s quibble about semantics, shall we?” she demanded. “What are you doing here?”

“Classified,” Will replied in what was clearly a knee-jerk reaction.

Darcy rolled her eyes. “Are you kidding me? My clearance is at least as high as yours.”

“How does an intern have clearance as high as mine?” Will questioned.

“I tazered a god,” she answered with a grin. “Anyway who said I was just an intern? And besides Coulson likes me.”

Will stared at her for a minute. “Okay, you know what, never mind. We need to get you out of here. It’s not safe.”

“I was perfectly fine until you practically snatched me off the street. And now you think I’m in danger?”

“Well, you’re in less danger here with me than you would be out on the street alone. I’m calling Clint. We need to get you out of here.”

Darcy eyed him suspiciously. “Why are you so eager to get rid of me? What are you up to?”

“Nothing bad, Darce, I promise, or nothing you need to worry about. But my cousin would have my head if something happened to you. Not to mention what the rest of the team would do. And I don’t need an angry god of thunder on my ass. What are you doing here anyway?”

“Believe it or not I’m on vacation.” Darcy threw her hands up in the air. “But Thor forbid I could even have a normal vacation.”

“Maybe you shouldn’t have left New York,” Will suggested. “Are you calling Clint or am I?”

“You better. Let him yell at you first,” Darcy said.

“Gee, thanks,” Will said. He dug his phone out of his pocket, hitting the speed dial. “Hey, Peep,” he said when his cousin answered. “I have something that you might want to send someone to retrieve.” He waved off Darcy’s indignation at being called a ‘thing’.

Clint chuckled. “Did you find a wayward chick?”

“Yeah. One that belongs to you. Think you could send someone to…” Will broke off as Benji banged through the doorway wincing at the noise the tech made. “Hang on. Shut the door, Benj. And lock it.”

“Secure line?” Benji asked as he followed directions. He grinned when he caught sight of Darcy. “Hey, love. Glad Will got you out before Ethan pulled his little trick.”

Darcy bounced up from where she’d taken a seat when Will started his conversation. She hugged the tech tightly. “Hey. Good to see you.”

“You’ve gotta see the new toys Tony sent us,” Benji said, digging into his bag.

“Yeah?” Darcy tilted her head towards him, looking to see what he had.

“Serious, cuz, could you send someone to get her before she tries to abscond with my tech?” Will asked.

Clint laughed again. “Yeah. Text me coordinates. Thor’s getting ready to leave.”

Will rubbed his aching head as he waved with the other hand to get Darcy’s attention. “We need to get you to the coordinates so you’re waiting when Thor gets here,” he said when they stopped talking.

“It’s not like Thor couldn’t find me anyway,” Darcy commented.

“The point is we don’t want the god of thunder striding through downtown looking for a shield maiden,” Will pointed out.

“Ah. Good point,” Darcy replied. She scooped up the bag she’d managed to hold onto and slung it across her chest. “Okay. So. How are we doing this?”

“Benji, stay here. If Hunt or Jane show up, let them know where I’ve gone. I’ll be back as soon as I can,” Will instructed.

Darcy bounced on her feet, causing Will to close his eyes briefly as everything else bounced too. “So I’ll call you in a couple of days. Or you’ll call me?” she asked Benji.

“I’ll call you,” he confirmed. “Just in case this takes a few extra days or something. Have a safe…flight.”

She grinned. “Air Thor, the safest way to travel.”

Will rolled his eyes. “Let’s go, Darcy. Before we’re late and he really does come looking for you.”

“Sir, yes, sir.” She snapped off a half-assed salute. “Please don’t become a stick in the mud like Coulson. Birdy said you could be fun.”

“And ‘Birdy’ will also kill me if something happens to you,” Will reminded her.

“Aw, your cousin wouldn’t kill you. Maim you maybe, but not kill you.”

“Now I understand why he generally leaves you to fend for yourself.” Will pointed at the door. “Mach schnell.”

Darcy threw her hands up. “Like I have any idea what that means.”

“March. Quickly.” Will pointed at the door again.

“All right. Fine.” Darcy rolled her eyes. “You don’t have to get cranky about it.” She hugged Benji quickly before heading out the door.

“I shouldn’t be long,” Will said to Benji. “Don’t. Leave.”

“Yeah. Okay. Not a problem. Absolutely. Not leaving,” Benji babbled. The closing of the door cut off whatever else he was going to say.

Darcy had a concerned look on her face when Will joined her on the sidewalk. “Will Benji be okay?”

“Yeah. He’s tougher than he looks. Let’s move.” He hustled her down the street. “He’s saved my life. Twice if you count the giant fan.”

“Giant fan? Okay you’ve gotta tell me that story some time.”

Will nodded tightly. “Yeah. Okay. But not now.”

Will had sent the coordinates of a park, figuring it would be empty at this hour. When they reached it, he was proven right as dusk had already fallen and the kids had long since scattered. Just as they reached the park, a reddish and silver blur arched over them. “Looks like your ride is here,” Will commented.

“Yeah.” She turned to face Will for a minute. “So are you going to tell me what’s going on?”

“You’re safer if you don’t know,” Will told her. “But...”

“LADY DARCY!” Thor thundered.

Darcy winced. “Okay. He really has to learn ‘inside voice’.” She waved to Thor. “Even if we’re outside.”

“Just go with Thor,” Will urged. “Benji’ll call you in a few days and if I can, I’ll explain then.”

Darcy oomped as Thor grabbed her into a hug. “You are well, Lady Darcy?” he asked, his voice lowered only a little bit, but at least he wasn’t yelling in her ear.

“I’m fine, Thor. Will’s just being over-protective like Clint and Steve. And you.”

“You might carry miniature lightning and be a mighty warrior, Lady Darcy, but you are still small. Of course we worry,” Thor said.

“It’s not that I don’t think you can’t do your job,” Will explained. “But this isn’t something you should be involved in. That’s why SHIELD asked us to handle it.”

Darcy nodded and stepped away from Thor, hugging Will. “Just be careful, okay? Try to keep Ethan’s explosions to a minimum.”

“Like you do the Avengers’?” Will teased.

“Technically that’s not my job,” Darcy answered. “My job is explaining why they blew it up afterwards.”

“Which might actually be more difficult,” Will said.

“Like you wouldn’t believe.” She pushed up on her tiptoes so she could press her lips to his cheek. “Keep yourself safe,” she whispered. “I’d hate to have to tell Clint you were dead.”

He hugged her tightly in response. “I will. Go with Thor. That’ll give him one less worry.”

She stepped back, allowing Thor to wrap his arm around her. “Hold tight, Lady Darcy.”

Will stepped back as Thor began to swing Mjolnir, preparing to take off. Darcy waved a hand before taking a better grip on Thor’s belt. She let out a squeak as they took off. Will tilted his head back, watching as they disappeared.
