Author's Note: So way back when…I originally posted the first half of this without a title and totally intending to do a follow-up. And then…life. And I don’t even remember what happened to my notes. At this point…I figure no one remembers me even writing this and I added a title and wow, I wrote the follow-up (dude I wrote the original in 2010). So fail on actually doing a timely fix it for these two, but at least I did fix them. Who knows, two years from now they might have the baby—no that does not mean I plan to actually write the story of them having the baby. That might break my brain. I’m gonna go play with Clint or Matt or someone else now.

Alice groaned as she dropped yet another item on the floor. She didn’t know why she was so nervous. This was going to go fine…everything had been going well since Hatter had found her again and there was no reason for her to be nervous’ just because she had some news for him. She knelt on the floor to clean up the mess as the front door to the apartment opened. “Alice?” a welcome voice called.

“In the kitchen,” she replied, pushing her hair out of her face as she slowly got to her feet.

“Hello, darling,” Hatter said cheerfully as he entered the room. “How was class today?” He kissed her gently on the cheek, slipping his arm around her waist. “Cooking dinner?”

“Class went fine. And yes, I wanted to talk to you so I thought it’d be easier over dinner.” She returned the kiss he offered to her with interest and nudged him towards the door. “Do you need to clean up before we eat?”

“Was that a hint?” He grinned at her, but untangled himself and left the room.

Alice took a deep breath after he left, trying to calm her shaking hands. He’s going to be thrilled, she reminded herself. While she waited for him to return, she finished up the dinner preparations; plating the food and moving it to the table. By the time he returned, she had also poured two glasses of sparkling cider and was looking around to make sure she hadn’t forgotten anything.

Hatter raised an eyebrow at her preparations. “Something going on?” he asked.

“I want…to talk to you…” she admitted, smiling tentatively. “But it can wait. Let’s eat first.”

He eyed her, but held her chair out for her and helped her sit down, bestowing a kiss on her head before taking his own seat. During dinner, he kept up a steady stream of chatter about the construction job he had worked on that day, cataloging as she got more and more nervous. As they finished eating, he pushed his plate aside and took her hand. “Alice, whatever it is, you can tell me,” he said softly.

She looked into his compassionate brown eyes and felt she could tell him anything; that everything would be all right. “I’m pregnant,” she blurted out.

He froze, his eyes widening as her words sunk in.”P-p-preg-n-n-nant?” he stuttered. “Like a baby? In there?” He waved a weak hand towards her mid-section.

“Yes, a baby in here.” Alice rested a hand over the spot. “Our baby.”

He pushed his chair back, abruptly getting up. “No. No. You can’t be. I’m not ready to be a father.” He scrambled from the room, almost knocking over the chair in his haste to leave. A moment later, she heard the front door slam.

“Well that went well,” she said staring at the empty place across from her.
