The Art of Shopping (for swingandswirl) 4/14 finished
Darcy wasn't sure who's bright idea it was for her to take the various Avengers shopping but she really wanted to have their heads examined. Preferably after a through tasing.
Barton had flat out refused and disappeared every time shopping or clothes was brought up in his hearing. Darcy honestly didn't blame him; he'd clearly been taking care of himself for quite a few years. Besides the few times she'd seen him in something other than his Avengers or SHIELD garb, he'd obviously known how to dress himself.
Shopping with Natasha often turned into shopping with Pepper (and Jane when they could drag her out of the lab) and was more of a girls' day out than a serious shopping trip. This didn't mean none of them bought anything but it more often than not turned into lunch and strolling down Fifth Avenue instead of serious acquisitions.
There was never any question on whether she was going to take Tony shopping. When she asked Pepper about it during one of their outings, Pepper considered her for a moment, then responded, “I don’t think that would be a wise idea. For either of you.” It was never mentioned again.
Bruce simply responded that he’d been issued a credit card backed by SHIELD and he found it more relaxing to shop on-line. Less stress meant less unauthorized visits by the Hulk and less chance of massive destruction. Darcy had to admit that was a good thing, especially since one of the junior agents had proven that attempting to Taser the Hulk really didn’t do anything but piss him off more. She simply marked it down and moved on to the next Avenger on the list.
Taking Steve to the different stores was always an adventure. She’d never known someone could turn that red. He’d stuttered through their first few shopping trips, embarrassed to be shopping with a dame (then apologized profusely for calling her a dame, a girl, a broad, dollface) until she laughed and reassured him that Darcy was just fine. They still had their hurdles (underwear would always be a point of dissention and Steve still turned red whenever she even mentioned it), but they had a fun time now. And Darcy would never forget how flattered she was when she’d watched the man she’d viewed as a sweet, shy guy rip into someone for what he considered bad manners. Of course he’d then turned around and apologized profusely for his own bad manners, but she’d reached up and pressed a soft kiss to his cheek in reply. He’d blushed and offered to buy her an ice cream. She genuinely looked forward to their trips out into the world.
And then there was shopping with Thor. Shopping with Thor was like trying to corral a Labrador on speed. She swore that no matter how many times she tried to keep him on task, every time he saw something it was like ‘ooo shiny’ and he was off. More than once, she’d ask Coulson if she could have a leash for him or permission to tase him if he ran away from her. At least she’d convinced him that yelling ‘Friend Darcy’ or calling for her from across the store was not proper etiquette. On the positive side, he was unfailing cheerful about shopping and willing to allow her to dress him in just about anything. Of course, this also meant she had to curb some of her more outrageous ideas because he really didn’t get the concept that real men did not wear fishnets, jeggings, or carry handbags. No matter how well they matched with their eyes.
Despite all the issues and the times she really wondered what she was getting into, Darcy enjoyed her shopping dates with the Avengers that she had. It was nice to see the people behind the masks and she counted them as some of her closest friends. Not that anyone would ever believe her stories.
I Dress Myself (for swingandswirl) completed 4/15
Clint Barton had done a number of things over the years for both himself and his country. He wasn’t proud of everything he’d done, but he knew that all of it had been necessary. That being said, when he got the order to report to Darcy for shopping assistance, he knew he needed to make himself scarce. It wasn’t that he objected to shopping (at least not any more than any other guy would), but the assumption that he needed help shopping. He was perfectly capable of dressing himself and didn’t need advice from an intern.
He spent most of his time in SHIELD issued combat gear, either the black or white all weather gear that fit a variety of terrains and situations. If he wasn’t in that, he was in the Hawkeye combat armour; which he appreciated more and more each time he wore it because he swore the ballistics vest could stop anything short of an anti-tank missile. In addition to that, the armour gave him an ease of movement he’d never had before. He had already made plans that if he ever parted ways with SHIELD, he’d make sure to liberate a less obvious form of the Hawkeye armour.
When he went out (and no he didn’t mean out on a date), he dressed depending on the situation. He’d learned a long time ago how to blend or stand out no matter what he needed and what clothes to wear so he had ease of movement and concealment. He tended towards muted colors that he knew looked good on him and didn’t call attention to him. Despite all this, he often wore a heavy leather jacket when he could; knowing it would provide protection from projectiles and keep people from approaching him. If he needed to stand out for some reason, his clothes were just a little tighter, just a little brighter, and he made just a little more noise. But it was so rare that he needed to stand out, that he had very few clothes that fit those criteria.
So he knew what looked good on him and he knew what type of clothes he should buy. He was a sniper who’s job was for no one to ever see him coming. So having someone else pick out his clothes or try to influence his choices just didn’t work for him. He could dress himself thank you very much.
