Author's Note: This is a little later in Arc Two, but it’s been finished and posting ready for a while. I originally wrote it for Gunslingaaahh’s Cuddle Fest and posted it there with the intention of posting it when I got to that part of the Arc. Since I’m writing a couple of things out of order, I decided to go ahead and post this today. I’m also going to update the Master Post with links and the current progression of where and what stories are planned for the Arc. I’m not sure what ones I’ll be writing when, but don’t necessarily expect them in order.

Despite what everyone seemed to think Danny and Steve had not been joined at the hip since Danny agreed to go out with him. Or anywhere else for that matter. Still it was extremely unusual for them to go more than a few hours without texting or talking or seeing each other. So after more than thirty-six hours without a word, Danny straddled his Kawasaki and slipped away towards the beach front house where Steve lived.

The sun was just beginning to set as he pulled up in front of the darkened house. He really wasn’t surprised at that, but when he opened the door and called out for Steve; he didn’t get an answer. That wasn’t usual. Although Steve had a lot of acquaintances, he tended to be a loner after school when it didn’t come to their small group of friends.

Moving through the house, Danny automatically headed for the lanai. For some reason he had yet to figure out, Steve almost always headed for the water when he was upset. When he reached the edge of the bricks, he peered towards the water, trying to find his wayward boyfriend.

A creak behind him drew his attention and he turned to see a dark shape curled up in the hammock that hung between two palm trees. “Steve?” he questioned, moving towards the shape.

Lanky legs uncurled and a dark head popped up. There was just enough light from the surrounding area for Danny to make out the puzzled expression on Steve’s face. “Danny?” he asked.

“Yeah, babe,” Danny replied, picking his way over to the hammock. He rested his hand on the edge, but didn’t make a move to climb in. “Why are you laying out here in the dark?”

Steve shrugged, the motion setting him swinging gently. “Didn’t want the illumination.”

“Yeah?” Danny responded. “How about some company?” At Steve’s nod, he tried to figure out how he could clamber into the hammock without tumbling them both onto the sand. “Ya know,” he bitched as he eyed the swaying ropes, “only you would use the word ‘illumination’ to mean light.”

Steve grinned briefly, his teeth flashing white in the limited light, and twisted. A moment later Danny yelped as he found himself on top of Steve in the hammock. A bit of wiggling around and the stockier boy was mostly on bottom, Steve’s head resting on his chest, an arm wrapped firmly around his waist as they swayed dangerously from side to side. Danny held his breath until they slowed to a less frantic pace. “What the ever-loving-fuck?!” Danny demanded when he was sure he wasn’t going to end up with a concussion or worse a mouth or ass full of sand. “What was that all about?”

“If I’d waited for you, you’d still be staring at the hammock,” Steve replied. He nudged against Danny’s hand until the other boy gave in and began carding a hand through his hair.

“Wanna tell me why you’re actually laying out here in the dark?” Danny asked after a few minutes. “And why I haven’t heard from you in almost two days?”

Steve buried his nose in Danny’s neck, pressing into the hand Danny was stroking through his hair as he wormed a hand up underneath the t-shirt the other boy was wearing. “Not really,” he answered after a minute.

Pressing a kiss to the top of Steve’s head, Danny decided not to press it. “Okay, babe. But I’m here…”

“I know,” Steve assured him.

For long moments, they lay there; the hammock swaying them gently. Finally Steve stirred and spoke, “She was killed three years ago this week. I just can’t believe…”

Knowing that anything he said would just be platitudes; he wrapped his arms more tightly around Steve and just held on. For now it was the best thing he could do.

This is adorable, so gentle and sweet. I love that Danny went looking for him, instinctively knowing Steve needed him.
