Title: Tuna Surprise!
Characters: Steve McGarrett/Danny Williams, Grace Williams
Fandom: Hawaii Five-0 (Shifter Verse AU)
Summary: Grace wants to help out in the new household.
Rating: PG
Warnings: Grace is adorable.
Disclaimer: No one recognizable belongs to me. Steve cannot really shift into a tiger on H50 (although that would be cool, right?).
Author's Note: So I was having a discussion with [livejournal.com profile] elisgalpal  about Grace and family dynamics and her making lunch for Steve the other day. And I got this image of a “helpful” seven year old…and Steve would want so badly to not upset her…but really…he would not want to eat this. Then again, she’s too adorable to say no to, especially since his tiger sees her as his kitten. (And yes I will probably address that issue at some point.)

Steve yawned and stretched, enjoying the flexibility he had in his tiger form. Cocking his head, he listened intently for the location of the rest of his family. From upstairs came the sounds of Danny moving around and a minute later, his voice could be heard, “Tuck the sheets in, corners perfectly squared. Smooth out the sheets so no wrinkles are found. Pillows go here, firm on this side, soft on that. Perfect. Even Mr. Anal Navy SEAL can’t complain now.”

Steve was tempted to go upstairs and jump on the bed, just to see what Danny would do, but the stealthy sounds from the kitchen drew his attention. There were no new smells; nothing out of place so he knew someone hadn’t invaded his domain, but his protectiveness meant he had to check on Grace.

He crept towards the room, carefully avoiding the board that would creak under his three hundred plus pounds and was almost to the doorway when he heard a childish voice call, “Here, kitty, kitty.”

Pausing for a moment, he tried to figure out if Grace was alone in the kitchen. He chuffed when he didn’t smell anyone other than her and backed up as she repeated, “Here, kitty, kitty.”

Slinking forward, he peered around the corner of the door, ears pricked forward as he tried to figure out who she was calling. When Danny had moved in, Steve had dug a small stool out of storage, wanting Grace to have a sturdy surface if she needed something higher than her reach. It was the same one he and Mary had used as children and it touched something inside him to see her standing on it now as she stirred something carefully in a bowl.

She turned, teetering for a moment on the stool but righting herself before he could move or become too concerned, a smile breaking out across her face. “There you are,” she said when she spied him. “Come on. I made lunch.”

Steve was about to back out, intending to go upstairs to get Danny and find some clothes so he could shift back into his human self, when the other man strode into the kitchen, almost treading on the tiger who’d been in the process of moving. A complicated maneuver later, they managed not to trip or actually step on each other and Steve was pressed up against Danny’s legs; eying Grace. He loved the little girl, almost as much as he loved her father, but he strongly objected to being referred to as kitty and he had a very bad feeling about what was in the bowl.

Danny had apparently heard her words or put the evidence together (the man was not a detective for nothing) because he’d worked a hand into Steve’s fur and was looking at his daughter somewhat exasperatedly. “Grace…what did you make for lunch?”

Grinning wider, she tilted the bowl so they could both see it. “Tuna fish! Steve’s a tiger. And tigers are kitties. So doesn’t he eat that?”

Danny bit his lip as he quite obviously held back a laugh. “Monkey, while Steve is part-cat. And he does like fish, I don’t think he really likes canned fish. How about we throw that out? And cook something together?” He glanced down at Steve who even in tiger form had a look of disgust on his face. “Maybe you could help us? Go find some clothes? And start a fire?” he suggested.

Yeah, that doesn't really sink in when you're that young. The whole kill-and-eat thing doesn't really connect.

Is it bad that when I said that, I kinda wanted Danny to be the one to dose him? XD

It doesn't. And Grace doesn't see Steve as someone she has to be afraid of...even when he's in tiger form. Because he'd never hurt her.

It is bad. But no Danny won't dose him.

And after the Excasy fic that was posted the other day...I'm...leery about writing and posting my fic.

She's such a sweetie, and Steve wouldn't hurt her.

She really is a sweetie. Steve will pretty much kill himself before he hurts her.

Um...yeah...Danny gets dosed with Ecstasy while on a job and generally just goes...wacky and gets high and jumps Steve...and it was not pretty.

I'm kinda scared to ask, but I kinda want to read it..... I occasionally have vaguely masochistic tendencies in this regard?

Also the little girl they have playing Grace is like adorable beyond words.

Able to Love (http://redsirenfiction.livejournal.com/62698.html) that's the fic...you'll have to let me know (privately) what you think of it. You should have my email...I emailed you earlier.

....................................................................................................**gapes**

buh, tha... buh..... **babbles** WHAT?! Dude, I've seen people on E. They're very friendly and like giving people hugs. That is like, some weird combo of acid and weed. **gapes some more** I've seen the "________ got high and confessed love/infatuation/smexy times ensued" in stories before, but that.... that was horrible!

Now do you see why I'm leery about doing the tiger!Steve on catnip? I know what catnip does to tigers...I can postulate from there what it would do to Steve...and yeah.

So um...I mean she does say it's crack. And she does say she's never done drugs. And she does say...I don't even remember what all...but um...yeah that was pretty much my reaction.

And no that was NOT what I was going to have Steve do...exactly.

I think my major problem is lack of research into the effects of the drug-of-choice, and that it was simply an excuse to get Danny high.

I've never done drugs and I know what kind of high which drugs give and what people on those drugs act like. Some of that might be a by-product of going to school in Boone, but...

Right? I mean if you're going to give a character drugs...at least do some research into said drugs.

I had always intended to do the drugging of Steve one of two ways. Either:

1) "Hey, babe, has anyone ever given you catnip?" just cause Danny's curious and wants to see what happens...cause I can see Danny wanting to see what happens to his tiger if you give him catnip

or

2) they're searching something, doing something and Steve accidentally inhales it. I mean...I need a reason to give it to him though. Because I'm not just into random drugging.

But then again, I've been accidentally high so I guess I can see it. I used to get a contact high just hanging around my dorm room in college first semester.

What does Boone have to do with anything?

Okay gonna go get everyone into bed for ya. Got them all into the room at least and they're talking :-)

I think the second option would be more plausible/less weird.

Boone is a major hippie-town. People go to class high. There was one guy who came to a criminal justice class high the day the narcotics cop came to talk to the class.

:D
