covert_fiction and a couple of people filled it, but I already had my own story started. This is my answer and it sorta answers it. Thanks to serenelystrange for the title!
The other members of his team crowded around Auggie as he fiddled with the keys on his ring, trying to find the right one. “If you’re so sure she’ll help us, why didn’t you call her?” Josh asked.
“Because she doesn’t exactly know I’m in the US,” Auggie answered, finding the right key with a sound of triumph and slotting it into the lock. He slipped inside and quickly tapped in a code before the alarm went off, then opened the door wider and motioned the team inside. “And it’s always easier to convince her when I see her…”
“When you see her what?” a female voice asked. “I swear to God, August, I’m changing the damn codes.”
Auggie turned around, a grin breaking out at the sight of her, despite her crossed arms. “When I see you in person. Hey, Emmie, baby.”
“Don’t ‘Emmie, baby,’ me,” she snapped. “What the hell are you doing in the states?” She nodded at the boys behind him. “Hi, Josh, Randy. I gather these are the new boys?”
The other three looked at them with varying degrees of worry as Josh grinned at her. “Tank and Murphy and the newest boy, Nelson,” he introduced them. “Auggie’s girl, Emma.”
She raised an eyebrow at him. “Oh, I’m Auggie’s girl? He thinks so anyway.” Turning her attention back to the man in question, she asked, “What do you want?”
He tried not to look too sheepish. “We need your help. We had an…incident…and…”
She looked confused. “And you can’t go to the base doctors why? Were you doing something you weren’t supposed to be?”
“You could say that,” Auggie admitted. “Will you help us?”
Emma glanced back towards the kitchen as if checking something, then nodded. “All right. Look. Go downstairs to the studio. I’ll grab my kit and meet you down there.”
Auggie paused to kiss her on the cheek and whisper something to her, but she stood firm until all of them started down into the basement. “What did you do to her?” Josh asked as they scattered around the room, collapsing on the furniture that was available.
Auggie glanced at the other team members; he and Josh had been working together the longest so the other man knew more of his history with Emma than the others although still not the whole story. “She’s probably just pissed I didn’t call and let her know I was back stateside.”
“She’s pissed that you apparently got hurt and didn’t bother letting her know,” Emma answered as she entered the room. “So you wanna tell me when you got back to the states? Did you get hurt on mission?”
“Not. Exactly,” Auggie responded slowly.
Emma dropped the kit on the bar and stared at him. “All right, August, what did you do?”
He crossed over to her, resting his chin on her shoulder so he could wrap his arms around her. “Am I gonna be ‘August’ for the rest of the day?”
“You’re gonna be August until you stop fucking with me. What’s going on?” she demanded.
He stepped back from her and reached for his shirt buttons. “We went out the other night and got shit-faced. And when we woke up the next morning…” He pulled his shirt off and turned around, offering her his back.
“Holy crap, Auggie!” she exclaimed, reaching out, but stopping just short of touching the angry looking skin. “Are you a fucking idiot?!”
“Do I have to answer that?” he replied.
“So all of you?” she questioned as she opened her kit.
“All, but Nelson,” Josh answered, “kid’s too new to get blitzed with us.”
“Or get inked,” Randy added.
“Are they all in the same place?” Emma asked, pulling a pair of gloves out and snapping them as she pulled them into place. She grinned as all six of the boys winced at the noise. When they shook their heads, she told them, “Strip then. I need to see where the ink is.”
“Ah, you need to see the actual ink?” Murphy asked.
Emma rolled her eyes at the blush that spread across the boy’s cheeks. “How is he surviving with you, Auggie?” she wanted to know. “And yes, the actual ink. Trust me, I’ve seen just about everything. Strip it off, boy.”
“You know if you wanted to get us all naked, Emma, all you had to do was ask,” Randy joked as he reached for his belt buckle.
Emma looked up from where she was examining Auggie’s back. “Randy, I never wanted to see you naked. Really never ever.”
Auggie grinned, then let out a yelp as she pressed down on the reddened skin. “Yeah, it’s definitely infected,” she confirmed. Brushing a gentle hand across the ink, she commented, “the artist did a beautiful job though.”
“Um, Emma?” the voice came from the stairs startling the men in the room and they spun towards it.
Auggie reacted automatically, pushing Emma behind him, even as he pulled his sidearm from his waistband. The sound of six safeties releasing was loud in the basement as the men produced guns from a variety of places and pointed them at doorway.
Emma peered around Auggie’s shoulder. “Stand down!” she ordered. “Stand down!” She pushed against his body, but he used his weight against her and refused to budge. “Auggie, it’s okay.”
The man at the top of the stairs, blonde and thin as a rail, had raised his hands upon being confronted with the guns. “Um, Emma?” he repeated.
“Its okay, Jake,” Emma soothed from where she was protected behind Auggie. “They’re a little jumpy.” She rubbed a comforting hand down Auggie’s bare arm. “Auggie, please don’t shoot him. I’d rather not have to explain how you shot an unarmed man.” Gently she pushed against his arm until he lowered the gun. “Guys,” she spoke to the rest of the team, “I promise he’s unarmed and not gonna hurt anyone. He’s not even former military.”
“It’s been a long week, Emma,” Josh replied, still keeping his eyes on the other man. Although Auggie had allowed Emma to push his gun down, the rest of the team still held theirs at the ready. “Tank, Nelson.” He jerked his head at the man at the top of the stairs.
The two named tucked their guns away before taking the stairs two at a time and herding the man back down them. Nelson patted him down before nodding the all clear. “He’s clean, Cap,” he said, backing away.
The rest of them put their guns up as Emma finally managed to squirm her way out from behind Auggie. She glared at him as she made her way over to the other guy. “Jake, are you…?”
“What the hell, Emma?!” he demanded, brushing off her concern. “Who are these crazy people?”
“Crazy people?!” she replied. “They happen to be my friends! And, yeah they may be a little trigger happy, but this is my house and you will not yell at me or my friends in it.” She crossed her arms. “I think you’d better go.”
Apparently realizing he’d made a mistake, he tried a smile. “I’m sor…”
“Get. Out,” she responded through gritted teeth. “You had your chance and you decided to call my friends names.”
Josh jerked his head at Nelson and Tank as the man turned to leave and they followed him up the stairs. Auggie turned to face Emma as they disappeared. “So is he why you weren’t happy to see me?” Auggie asked as she went to look through her kit.
“He’s a classmate, Auggie,” she replied, “nothing more.” Holding up a bottle of pills, she shook them at him. “Antibiotics. There should be enough for all of you, but I want to check the rest of you, too.” She took a cream out of her case. “And you can use this too.”
Once she’d smoothed the cream onto Auggie’s back, she moved on to check Josh’s shoulder. The older man turned so she could see his shoulder and held still as she carefully cleaned it and then applied the cream. “I know y’all aren’t complete idiots so you wanna explain to me how you ended up with infected tats?”
“We were drunk?” Josh offered as he watched Auggie dig through her kit for empty bottles.
Emma glared at Auggie as he spilled part of the kit onto the bar, although her annoyance wasn’t transmitted to movements as she moved onto Randy’s thigh. She frowned as she looked up at him. “Really?” she asked. “That’s just kinda creepy.”
“What?” he replied with a grin. “You don’t think the artist did a beautiful job on my artwork?”
“No I’m just impressed you let someone that close to your junk with a sharp object that was carrying something that could have infected it.”
She grinned as his expression turned to one of panic. “It’s not gonna fall off is it?”
“No, Randy, it’s not gonna fall off.” She stood up to move on to Tank. “Not from this anyway.”
The rest of the team chuckled and tossed insults at the man as she finished up with the last two boys who’d gotten themselves inked. Somehow both of them have less of an infection and the only thing she can figure is that they’ve been itching at the slowly healing skin.
She turned to Nelson as she stripped off the most recent pair of gloves. “I know Josh said you didn’t get inked, but are you okay with everything else?”
The young man looked over at the rest of the unit, who had gravitated towards where Auggie and Josh were looking through Emma’s CDs. “I’m fine, ma’am.”
Emma began to put her kit back together, accepting the items from Nelson with a smile. “The boys are being nice to you?” She raised her voice, “’Cause I will kick their asses if they aren’t.”
“No, ma’am, they’re fine,” Nelson responded.
She held his gaze for a minute as if testing to be sure he was telling the truth, then nodded. “Good.” Closing up the kit, she asked, “Are y’all planning to stay here tonight?”
Josh shook his head. “No, we’ve gotta be back on post by five pm tomorrow. So we’ll head back now that way we’ve got plenty of time.” When Emma opened her mouth to say something, he motioned to Auggie. “I think someone needs to talk to you.”
Auggie loitered by the stereo as the rest of the unit gathered up their belongings and listened to the instructions Emma imparted. She hugged Josh and Randy and gave the others a little wave as they followed the older men up the stairs. When she turned back, he had stuffed his hands in his pockets and was looking sheepish. “Thanks,” he said.
“Come mere,” she said, motioning him over. When he crossed over to her, she slipped a hand into his hair, pulling his head down and kissing him gently. “Hi,” she whispered.
He slipped his arms around her waist, drawing her close. “Surprise?” he suggested.
“Yeah, not so much. What the hell were you thinking? You’re lucky I’m not jumpy, Auggie,” she replied, attempting to break his hold and glaring when he just tightened his arms in response.
“Well, I certainly wasn’t expecting to find another guy here.” He leaned his forehead against hers. “I don’t want to fight with you. I’ve got to be back on base tomorrow and we’re most likely going to ship right back out. Please?”
“I told you I didn’t want to do this, Auggie. If you wanna be a playa that’s fine. But I am not gonna be a booty call whenever you get horny and don’t want to spend the time picking a girl up.”
“Emmie,” he sighed. “You are not a booty call. If nothing else, you’re my friend. I swear to you I didn’t come here for sex. I came here for the help you gave us. And I came here because no matter what you are my best friend.”
She rested her head against his chest, breathing deeply. “I can’t do this anymore. I can’t be jerked from side to side and back and forth, Auggie.”
“I love you, Emmie, you know that, right?” he asked. “No matter what, I do love you.”
“I know, Auggie. I just…” She sighed. “I got a job offer today.”
“That’s great!” He looked down at her face. “That’s not great?”
“It’s the CIA.”
His grip on her waist tightened for a moment, loosening when she gasped. “Sorry. What did you tell them?”
“I didn’t tell them anything yet, but I’m considering taking the job. It would be outsourcing only as needed. And then I’d be able to know sorta where you are and what you were doing or at least know when you’re in country.”
Auggie looked away from her for a minute. “I get your reasons, but…” He shook his head. “They use people up and spit them out.”
“And yet you want to stay with them,” she pointed out. “Even if you aren’t a soldier boy don’t think I don’t know you well enough.”
“I swore an oath, Emma,” he snapped.
“I fucking know that, August. I was there. Hell, I swore the same one. And I may have done my time, but I’ve still got things I can do.”
He raked a hand through his hair. “I don’t…I don’t want to fight. Please. I’m telling you that’s not what I came here to do. Can we…can we just sleep? And forget about all this crap?”
“Yeah, okay,” she finally agreed. “But just sleep.”
He nodded. “All right. Go up, I’ll lock up for you.”
When he got up to her room, she was already in bed, scribbling notes on a pad. She set it aside as he entered the room, watching as he stripped down to boxer briefs and slipped into bed beside her. “So what prompted y’all to get yourselves inked?” she asked as he rolled onto his side and rested a hand on her hip.
“It seemed like a good idea at the time,” he replied.
“For future reference? ‘It seemed like a good idea’ and permanent body art should never go together.” She leaned up and kissed him. “In addition, you should never mix alcohol and tattooing.”
He snorted. “Yeah, I think we found that out. But at least I didn’t end up with something stupid.”
“Yes, you could have ended up with something much worse than your team crest. You ready to sleep?”
He ran his finger along the strap of her tank top, tugging on it. “I guess. What did you think of it?”
“It’s hot, Auggie, you’re well aware that I like tattoos.”
“But is mine hot?” he asked with a grin.
“Yes, Auggie, but don’t push it.”
“So are you ever going to get one?” he asked as they arranged themselves, his arms wrapped around her and her body nestled against his.
“I don’t know, maybe. You need to sleep though. Especially if you might be shipping out tomorrow.”
“Good night, Emmie.”
“Go to sleep, Auggie,” she replied and shook her head as he chuckled in reply. He pressed a kiss to the top of her head, then shifted behind her. A few minutes later, they both drifted off to sleep.

He snorted. “Yeah, I think we found that out. But at least I didn’t end up with something stupid.”
“Yes, you could have ended up with something much worse than your team crest. You ready to sleep?”
He ran his finger along the strap of her tank top, tugging on it. “I guess. What did you think of it?”
“It’s hot, Auggie, you’re well aware that I like tattoos.”
“But is mine hot?” he asked with a grin.
“Yes, Auggie, but don’t push it.”
“So are you ever going to get one?” he asked as they arranged themselves, his arms wrapped around her and her body nestled against his.
“I don’t know, maybe. You need to sleep though. Especially if you might be shipping out tomorrow.”
“Good night, Emmie.”
“Go to sleep, Auggie,” she replied and shook her head as he chuckled in reply. He pressed a kiss to the top of her head, then shifted behind her. A few minutes later, they both drifted off to sleep.

Woot! I might um...now have the series? Although I haven't gotten far in re-watching it...mostly because a couple of friends got me side-tracked watching Glee. (Looong story)

29/9/10 18:51 (UTC)I haven't seen Glee since towards the end of season 1. Its the only show that I have had a complete 180 degrees opinion of during a season. I stated off LOVING it but now I can't watch it. A lot of my friends are really into it still though so I occasionally catch snippets still.

I don't even really watch it...at least not on TV, but two of my friends are like obsessed with it. And they've been bugging the crap outta me...so I said I'd give it a chance. There's not much on during the day (and since I'm stuck at home all day) I've been watching it. I love music and singing...so I'll watch it. Another friend tells me to treat it like crack fic and I find I can watch it then.
Haha awesome! I'm playing with pictures right now and I've got some pictures of Jake that I capped to show a friend some old pictures of him...so I've got them in the folder to see what I can do with them.

I really thought I'd love Glee. I'm a massive Musicals fan (I counted when I moved house and out of my DVD's, around 250 of them are musicals! Also, I love Jane Lynch in the show, it has a fun vibe and it is slightly crack-fic-ish. I just got turned off cos I find the way they treat some characters as stereotypes when the show proclaims to be really diverse a bit uncomftable to watch. Maybe I'm scrutinising it too much? I dunno. I know that I WANT to like it, but I just can't seem to.

Everyone was pretty damn awesome, really sweet and nice. And really approachable. Even when they were tired and/or hungover or both.

Yes, yes. This is true. Guh. And he just stands there...and TALKS...and expects us to be able to FOCUS! And then he turns around...and...TATTOO. Yeah I fully admit to being braindead the first few times I watched that episode...and I should probably be ashamed of myself but I'm not.
I am amused that Christopher hasn't done anything but put on muscle between Jake and CA...but he's also not as young as I thought he was...so moving on now...
