shanachie_quill: christmas leonard (stevie head bowed)

*yawns* I’m not sure how coherent this is going to be because for some reason my lovely insomnia decided to kick in last night and despite doing my normal routine, I didn’t sleep pretty much at all.

[livejournal.com profile] ctrokj  arrived around 1pm Monday and we enjoyed a relaxing afternoon and evening waiting for [livejournal.com profile] serenelystrange  to join us, including going out to dinner at my favorite Italian place (Pisano’s). After [livejournal.com profile] serenelystrange  arrived, we hung out for a bit longer before going to bed. We knew we’d be heading into the city the next day…but we didn’t need to leave to early. I’d called Bitter End and knew we couldn’t get in before 7pm.

So yeah…fail on the writing before taking a nap…not that I feel much better…but I did sleep a bit. So back to the whole…what we did in the city yesterday :-)

We kinda bummed around in the morning…I called Dunellen Bagel and we ran over there and got breakfast, then around 1-ish started heading into the city. So because Jersey is dumbass…the trains no longer run all night—they stop around like 12 or something that which means we would have had to leave The Bitter End at like 11…so if the show wasn’t over or we were still hanging out…it would have sucked big time. But…a couple of years ago…I solved this problem. Drive up to the ferry dock on Staten Island, park and take the boat over. Ferries run all night…so no reason to worry about when we left. Gotta say…someone at the Bitter End has a wicked sense of humor…we had a good laugh over the directions when we got to the bottom it read:

By Helicopter:
Fly over top of building. Look for Helipad on Roof. If Unable to see one dangle rope ladder in front of club and descend.
By Horse:
Anyway you want. Tying post and grazing area available upon request.

Anyway after we stopped laughing, I went back up and got the subway directions—which were pretty easy.

We got to the city early enough that once we got to Bleecker Street and found the bar, we decided to wander about a bit…finally decided on Chinese for dinner, then after wandering for a bit more, sat down on a beach by a branch of one of the colleges and read until it was time to walk back and get in line for the show. I’m glad the others insisted on getting in line early, although we had to stand there for a bit (and the line was nowhere near as long as Dante’s), we ended up with awesome seats that [livejournal.com profile] ctrokj  picked :) right up against the stage in front of where Steve was sitting. (And I believe [livejournal.com profile] serenelystrange  tweeted or something a “we are REALLY fucking close to the stage” picture).

Oh…so I’ll give y’all my *face palm* moment. After showing my ID, I started to walk right past the guy who was taking the cover and banding people. [livejournal.com profile] ctrokj  and the bouncer guy grabbed me and I did pay…but yeah…

The bar is apparently a pretty well-known music bar (I’d almost call it like a piano bar) and they do like a bunch of bands some nights. Last night they had a bunch of different bands…but Steve was the second act so we only listened to one other than him. She was pretty good, very energetic and rather perky, but a fun little performance. She even did a little acapella audience participation song for her last number and was all excited about it. I’m not sure it’s something I would listen to on my own, but she had impressive breath control and range. If you’d like to check her out…you can find her on myspace at Jess Hodge or at her own site.

And just because I did take one picture of her:
Photobucket

And then it was time for the reason we had taken this trip! Steve, Darren, and Rosalee made their way onto stage, settled in, and Steve informed the audience that a) they were really jet-lagged because they had flown in from Rome that day. Darren looked up from what he was doing and said “Yesterday.”
“Um, no, today.”
“It was yesterday, Steve.”
“So we’re really jet-lagged and we’re gonna be recording the show tonight so we’d like to get as many songs in as possible so we’re not going to be talking much.” And they just started playing.

It was an awesome show :D The energy is completely different from any other concert I’ve ever been to, but it was a wonderful energy and I honestly could have listened for a much longer time. But I understand why they couldn’t play longer.

These are the songs we know for sure they played…I thought they might have played more, but we couldn’t remember anymore.
Order of the ones I remember:
Safe to say
Piñata Novia
Wasted Jamie

Then I can’t remember the order, but these were the others:
What Goes Around Comes Around
Hummingbird Billy
Between You and Me
Casual Smile
She’s Not There

And they closed out with:
Nonstop Lady

In addition, Rosalee sang two of her songs:
The End is Near
Jack and Jill

Rosalee gracing us with one of her lovely songs

Some random fun moments from the concert :D
Darren was flipping pages to get to a song and showing Steve the book…Steve goes “No. No. No.” then grins and goes “Yeeeaaah” at one point. I do believe the one he said yes to…was one of the previous no’s.

Remember the jet-lag comment? Steve is explaining why they’re so jet-lagged and that they are on tour for “the new CD. The new CD…crap what’s the name of the new CD?” Darren and Rosalee are looking at him like ‘are you kidding me?’ [livejournal.com profile] ctrokj , [livejournal.com profile] serenelystrange , and I all blurted out “Days Behind” and Steve kinda looked down at us, laughed a little, and grins, then goes “Yeah, right, Days Behind.” The laugh was kinda like ‘I have fangirls…right there…and I dunno he was like really amused about the whole thing.

For “Casual Smile”, he sets his guitar down and goes, “So there’s this one song on the new CD and I play no instrument on it…which I hate.” But it’s an awesome song and they did a lovely job with it.

Steve trying to find something to do with himself during ‘Casual Smile’ since he doesn’t have his guitar
Photobucket

He asked us to buy the CDs so they didn’t have to cart them home again and then goes “and they’re off stage to your…” looks to our left (his right), then to our right (his left), thinks about it… “right.” And that…I know how hard it is to translate stage directions into audience site when you are on stage. Darren was sitting there pointing to where the CDs were though…which was fun.

When they did Hummingbird Billy…I totally kicked myself this morning…I completely forgot my camera can take video. Darren and Steve just totally went to town playing the keyboard and guitar…just completely showing off. I mean I was impressed with Steve before but Darren? Fucking a-MAZ-ing…and the two of them together…wow. If that’s what they do when they are so jet-lagged they’re almost falling over? Just…wow…

The guys rocking it out during ‘Hummingbird Billy’
Photobucket

There was one song (I can’t remember which one) where Steve finger picked instead of using the guitar pick. So he needed to do something with the guitar pick. He didn’t want to stand up apparently and put it in his pocket, so he tried to stick it on his guitar. It promptly slid off. So he licked it, stuck it on his guitar again and told it “Stay!” This amused me so greatly I had to take a picture of it:
Photobucket

Of course after that song when he tried to pick it up again, it slid out of his fingers and fell on the stage so he just left it there.

I think I said they were recording the show last night (I am totally too lazy to go back and look), but we have no idea why or what they are doing with it. Perfect venue for recording it though. It would be totally awesome if they released it live (and yes I totally forgot to ask why they recorded it).

After the show (and after I got my CDs--Days Behind, Groovin on the Inside and Rosalee’s Love is the Way), we headed outside to talk to Steve, Darren, and Rosalee for a few minutes. ([livejournal.com profile] ctrokj  had asked Darren if Steve was going to come back out and visit when we saw him on our way to the merch table because Steve had vanished as soon as they stopped playing.)

Since Steve was (of course) being monopolized by other people when we got out there, we talked with Rosalee and Darren for a bit first. Rosalee was so cute when we asked her to sign her CD. She seemed genuinely surprised that we would ask—asking us “really?! Me?” when we held them out to her. She was very sweet though, asking our names and how to spell them.

Steve finished up his conversations and turned, starting to head back into Bitter End. We totally thought he was leaving (and we had struck up a conversation with another couple of girls while we were waiting—on and off) so [livejournal.com profile] ctrokj  and I yelled out “Steve!” He spun back around, pointing at himself, then at the door, and said (in a sheepish little boy type voice) “I was just gonna go get a drink.” We apologized, but explained we didn’t know that and didn’t want him to disappear since we had been waiting. He very nicely came back and signed our CDs and took a picture with [livejournal.com profile] ctrokj  and me then signed things for the other girls before going inside though.

While he was signing, [livejournal.com profile] ctrokj  asked him if he could get Kane to come to the East Coast. He replied (in all seriousness) “I can’t get Kane to do anything.” LOL the funniest part? She meant the band…and Steve totally took it as Christian. She backtracked and explained, but he insisted it wasn’t his choice.

me, Steve, and [livejournal.com profile] ctrokj
Photobucket

So all in all it was a totally awesome night. I really enjoyed the music and the show…I will say I did not enjoy two things. One…the price of drinks in bars in Manhattan (fricking 3+ bucks for like 6 ounces of soda? Dayam) and driving in Staten Island. Yes I know…I used to live there…I never particularly liked to drive there when I lived there either…but much better to drive on the Island than having to rush away because otherwise we’d miss the last train.

And since [livejournal.com profile] serenelystrange  did the "fingerwork" on this one and we both wanted to pimp RosaleeWanyway...if you'd like to get a copy of her CD--it is available for download on Amazon at: Love is the Way

In addition, Steve's new CD Days Behind is available at Amazon for download or at his site for purchase (if I read his site right)

All of the pictures I took are here…I was totally wrapped up in the music and didn’t take many (didn’t even realize it until later) and you (obviously) saw some of them already.

And now for some random pictures

So end result? If they come back to the area and I can make the show? Totally willing to go :D

Poor thing, he does look really tired. Also the picture of the pick sticking to the guitar, totally made me giggle..."Stay"!

Yeah...he was a really good sport though and the music was totally awesome. They kept it upbeat for the most part, even the slower songs.

Oh *giggles* the whole "Stay!" thing...that was totally hysterical. And like completely random. Of course then he dropped it on the floor which actually made it even funnier.

Aw poor thing. It was totally weird (the whole they came to NYC thing) because I swear I don't ever remember them doing it before...and the first time I called the bar (a couple months ago)--they were like "Who? Who in the 'ell are ya talkin' about?" but then when I called on Monday...yeah. Then again...they were there (same bar and all), a couple of weeks ago.

At the same time...they have to have come to the city before. *shrugs* but I dunno.

I would love to see Steve or Christian life... *whines*

Oh, and BTW: You remember Christians EP and my problems?
I bought Steves CD via Amazon downlaod and I swear it was really really crazy because Amazon was making it really hard to buy the CD. I don't know... like they want me to " steal" it or something *shakes head* but it was worth it because I love "Don't go"

I've seen both Kane and Steve live now...and let me tell you...the shows are completely different. Different energy, venues, attitudes, everything. I was actually discussing it with a friend last night (not one who went...but she kinda um *coughs* attended the show *coughs*) who like me is a former singer--although she is still part of a choir--about how different the two shows were. And I do not think it was because of how jet-lagged Steve, Darren, and Rosalee were. It's just a completely different vibe you get off the three of them verses Kane. Not saying its a bad thing...I really enjoyed both shows, just a different feeling.

Um...vaguely? I'm kinda on brain dead here...haven't had much sleep or really broken sleep the last few days and my momo woke me up about 30 minutes ago to watch my sister while she ran out. So we probably did discuss it and it's just not penetrating the fog that is my brain at the moment. Glad you got it though and are enjoying the music :-)

Now excuse me while I go beat eljay into submission because it will not let me access a friend's page so I can see what she posted. *grumbles* I click the link...you open the page...seriously this not even middle school science people!

Bad Safari! Let Ele see the pretty pictures...man we were like...I'm not kidding you...the damn table was up against the stage. He did like a double take when we blurted out the CD title.

Oh the direction thing was priceless. It wasn't that he didn't know it...I'm sure you've had that issue (I know I have). You're trying to give someone directions and you're facing them and it's the "my left, your right" sorta thing. But he was so jet-lagged, he just couldn't convert it in his head. I'm also not sure he could actually see the little table they had from where he was--between the stage lights, lack of off-stage lights, and Darren and a booth in his way.

He wanted people to buy the stuff so they didn't have to lug them back home (almost an exact quote). When we went over...they had I dunno...about 10 or so of Days and Rosalee's CDs left. Maybe 5 of Groovin' and that was it. There were some t-shirts, but I dunno how many so they were doing a good job selling stuff.

The "Stay" was hysterical...hence the picture. There was something else he said where he was like talking to himself...but I can't remember what it was. The "no. no. no. Yeeeeaaah" was funny too.

Oh and when they did "What Goes Around, Comes Around" I swear that is not the song they were planning...because Steve started it...and Darren took a minute to catch up and was going "What the hell, Steve?!" But it sounded awesome and that's one of my favorite songs.

I'm hoping *fingers crossed* that they recorded it because they are going to release it as a live show.

Yes...the "I can't get Kane..." He was soooo serious about it too. Like he completely answered it seriously and honestly. But honestly he was very nice and despite being so tired, he did stand there and talk for quite a while. And when we left, he was still chatting.

Did ya get to see the pix yet? There is a link that goes directly to the album...and wow...I just kinda like...rambled on, didn't I?

ooh, a live album would be fantastic!!!

*grins* Thanks. Seriously...we were sooo close. The pictures came out awesome. *blush* He was very nice about the picture considering we like "yelled" at him. And I did not realize until I saw the picture how much my um...boobs...stick out in that shirt. Which was kinda ya know the point...but wow. And man...my gay best friend picked out that shirt...shame on him!

I totally should not laugh at him for being jet-lagged, but it was seriously adorable. And he really did look tired...but as soon as he started playing...you could see him get lost in the music.

Wouldn't it though? I'm annoyed that I didn't think to ASK him why they were recording it! But I'm really hoping they will release it...not just because a live album would be fantastic, but then I can say "I was THERE!" Cause yes, I am that much of a geek.

Yes, what the hell, eljay? I seriously emailed one of my friends and was like "are you mad at me?" because her journal was the ONLY one I couldn't access. It was so weird.

*huggles* sleep well. Have good dreams!

NYC is probably the only thing I like about the state I live in. I love the city (could never live there again, but love visiting...the energy, the things I can do and see, the bands!), but I really, really hate my state.

I totally had an awesome time...completely different from the Kane show...but not in a bad way. He's just got a different sound and vibe to him.

Of course I'd share. I'm not greedy...not of things like this anyway.

Awww nobody comes to Liberia :( I mean they could build a stage out of sticks and hire ex-SAS security like Anthony Bourdain, hahahahaha

I wonder if Steve is just like that or...he was pretty funny. Apparently he and CK kinda talk to themselves. Set list was interesting...you know, I really like the new CD better than the rest. It just has everything that I love about Steve's music.

I'm not surprised his show was totally different, and I'm glad that he stayed and talked to y'all. Though the 'I can't get Kane to do anything' comment....bitter much, Steve?

Aw I'm sorry no one comes to Liberia...but honestly...no sorry...I just have no other response to that.

Ya know...when I first got his music I was like engh...it's okay, but the more I listen...the more I love it. And seriously? The man cracks me up sometimes. He is totally beyond NOT SUBTLE at times.

Some of the talking to himself...he was just at that point I think he was beyond tired. I mean he and Darren totally had an argument/discussion about when they flew in. And Rosalee was just sitting there. I said to a friend...I can totally see the two of them like bickering over something and then Rosalee going "Boys? We're doing it MY way." Especially after learning that she and Darren are married. (Which...seriously? Was too cute.)

There are songs on the new CD I really love. He was too funny about Casual Smile. He seriously did NOT know what to do with his hands.

On the Kane comment...bitter no...he was quite serious though...which was what made the whole exchange so funny. I wouldn't call it bitter though. More of a facts of life sorta thing. It was funny how seriously he answered though. And then her trying to backtrack and explain that she meant the band and not Christian himself.

And she was seriously adorable when we asked her to sign her CD. She was like "Really?! Me?" I have no idea why she had that reaction...but it was sweet.

And she and Darren were so funny talking to each other and to us.

I was impressed with how nice they all were considering how exhausted they were. And they were still talking when we left...granted it wasn't that late, but still. They were seriously wracked.

*nods* Yeah, they're honestly in awe that not only people come to listen to them, but actually want to talk with them and have their autographs. Darren and Rosalee probably even more so, but even Steve (and from what I’ve heard, Chris as well) seems to think that he’s just a regular guy and he doesn’t really get what all the fuss is about; which makes them so awesome!
Which is probably why they stick around to talk with their fans, even though they're exhausted.

Chris was...harried, I'll say when I met him. But he was still nice. And just kinda overwhelmed I think. Seriously overwhelmed with everything going on. And I think he was also extremely overbooked that weekend. He was never not nice and he was kind to me--caught me when I was shoved towards him during photo ops.

We had a good laugh over Rosalee taking all of Darren's money. He kinda shrugged and was like "That's what happens when you're married." Then was a little...amused that we thought it was so cute they're married.

LOL poor Steve...we seriously owe him a drink the next time we see him. He wanted to go get one and we were like "hey! Get back here!" but he was very good natured about coming back and talking with us and all. And amusing as hell with the "but I was just gonna go get a drink" little did he know I had been warned about him getting side-tracked.

*nods* And things like that...make me more willing to keep listening to their music and supporting and pimping them. Its what made me follow a couple of other bands...and now that I've met them...I'll keep supporting and following them. Mean to your fans? Rude? Yeah...I'm not gonna listen for long or not worry about how I get ahold of your music.

We noticed Rosalee's rings during the show...but damn our mouths like dropped open when he made that comment. But we told them congrats and they make a cute couple. He does seem like a sweetheart.

Bizarrely enough...I've met bands (who survive on fans' good will, etc--who are complete assholes when confronted with meet and greets.)

Seriously--these guys were the nicest I've met in a long time...I used to do a lot more concerts, etc than I do now. But I can tell ya that a lot of the like '80s hard rock bands, etc...assholes unless the fans in questions are hot, pretty, skinny--top heavy girls.

On the other hand--Gaelic Storm (the band in Titanic)--another band always willing to lift a pint with their fans or at least they were the last few times I saw them.
