Author's Note: So I’ve totally got this headcanon that Peggy was around (at least until she had her own family or maybe even after since we don’t have a clear timeline for Tony) when Tony was growing up. I’d love to hear some stories of Aunt Peggy. So this is just… yeah.

“I managed to follow a military unit across half of Europe, I think I can manage to find one little boy,” Peggy told the nanny who had greeted her when she arrived at the Stark mansion. “What do you think I am some kind of bloody knob?” She pushed past the woman, muttering, “Bloody git.”

“You cannot just barge in here,” the nanny protested.

“You appear to have misplaced your charge,” Peggy said icily, “which does not bode well for your future employment. I suggest you allow me to pass before I find Mr. Stark and inform him of your inadequacy.”

The woman didn’t seem to know how to respond to that other than moving aside as Peggy swept into the house. She really wasn’t all that surprised to find Tony missing when she dropped by. Even when the nannies were good at keeping an eye on him, he seemed to give them the slip. This one had lasted longer than most, managing to at least have a general idea of him the last two times she’d stopped in. Still Peggy hadn’t been alarmed to appear at the house and not be greeted by Tony. Her main goal now was to find the boy before Howard noticed he was missing. Absent father he might be, but he tended to go off the deep end when his only child disappeared. To say nothing of what Maria would do when she returned home from her charity function and realized her precious boy was MIA.

Once inside, Peggy shrugged her coat off and looked around before depositing it on the rack for that purpose. With a final look at the nanny, she moved off with purpose.

One of the things she had learned while working with Steve and the Commandos was to know her enemy and her allies. And she absolutely knew Tony. There was no way he was hiding in one of the places she’d found him before. So she didn’t bother heading for the garage (where she’d once found Tony sound asleep in the backseat of the car from the 1942 World Fair) or Howard’s lab. Instead she headed down the stairs to the seldom used areas.

A few weeks prior when she’d been visiting, she’d noticed lights on after Tony had been sent to bed. When she had investigated, she’d discovered that Tony had started to build himself his own little lab. It wasn’t nearly as expansive as Howard’s but it was more than most seven year olds had; even most genius seven year olds.

Peggy couldn’t remember exactly where the lights had been in the lower levels, but she figured it wouldn’t take her long to locate the young Stark. Little did she know just how much of a rabbit warren the lower levels of the mansion were.

She was sure Howard had originally had a plan for the lower levels at some point. Unfortunately the best laid plans of geniuses often got distracted by their ideas. She’d seen it numerous times when she was working with him during The War and she was sure that was what had happened here. Most of the rooms were packed with discarded experiments, clothes, or boxes of things she didn’t want to examine too closely. A few of them were more organized though and she wondered who had been going through them. It didn’t seem like something Maria would do, but she also knew none of the servants would dare touch anything without some sort of direction.

Poking her head into yet another room, Peggy smiled as she moved more fully into the room. “Your nanny is wondering where you are,” she commented.

Tony didn’t look up from the delicate wiring he was attempting. “No she’s not.”

“Tony.”

“What? She doesn’t care. As long as Dad pays her and I don’t cause too much trouble.” Tony yelped as something sparked and Peggy moved forward to see if he was all right.

“Tony!” she said again.

“I’m fine, Aunt Peggy,” the boy said with a sigh as he shook his hand out. He pulled back from what he was working on. “And he’s finished.”

“Are you sure?” she asked.

“Yeah, I’m sure he’s finished.”

“Oh, Tony, no. Are you sure you’re all right?” Peggy tried to see his hand, but Tony was already closing up what he was working on.

“What? Huh?” Tony finally looked up from what he was doing. “I said I was fine, Aunt Peggy. Do you want to see what I’ve been working on?”

Gracefully Peggy tucked her skirt underneath her legs as she took a seat next to Tony. “Of course, sweetie. Absolutely.”

Tony grinned at her, turning back to his… Peggy could now see it was some sort of machine. “It’s a bot,” he declared. When she just looked at him, he explained, “I built a robot. He’s got a semi-limited artificial intelligence. I’m still working on the coding so I can build a better one, but he should be able to do minimal tasks.”

“That’s great, Tony,” Peggy praised him. “What’s his name?”

“His name?” Tony questioned as he turned the bot on. “Why would he have a name?”

“If he has a personality, he must have a name,” Peggy insisted.

For a minute, Tony stared at him. “I didn’t name him. Why would I name him?”

Peggy smiled at him. “Well, why don’t you start him up and we’ll see what he’s like. Then you can name him.”

Tony considered this for a minute before shrugging. “If you say so, Aunt Peggy.”

Peggy resisted reaching out and ruffling his hair. “Ready to turn your ‘bot’ on, my young inventor?”

“Yup,” Tony said. He ducked under what could only be an arm and clambered around to the back of the robot, reaching for a switch. Peggy held her breath as he hung from a support at the back, twisting around and hanging upside down to reach something.

Tony let out a sound of triumph after a moment as the robot jerked, moving forward and almost dropping Tony on his head. Peggy grabbed at him, attempting to prevent him from falling, but Tony somehow twisted around and landed on his side instead. “Ow,” he complained.

Once she was sure he wasn’t injured, Peggy bit back a laugh. Tony was so much like his father at times like these that it was almost too much. Or so much like Howard had been. Before. Before they’d lost James and then Steve and Howard had lost his sense of self in the search for the plane Steve had crashed in the Artic. “What does he do?” she asked, attempting to pull her thoughts away from the maudlin.

Tony crawled out from under the bot, dusting himself off. “He’s a helper,” he explained. “He’ll bring me things and move things I can’t lift.” He sighed as the bot ran into the wall. “He’s such a dummy.”

This time Peggy covered her mouth, but wasn’t quite able to stifle the laugh. “Oh, Tony. I think your bot has some unclear wires.”

“I don’t understand it.” Tony frowned as the bot turned and rolled across the floor, running into the opposite wall. “He shouldn’t be doing that. He really is a dummy!”

“What are you going to name him?” Peggy asked as Tony clambered up onto the stool next to her.

“Well, he’s such a dummy that it seems like a perfect name,” Tony commented. “Hey. Dummy.” The bot looked up at the sound. “And he knows his name. Perfect.”

“Your father is not going to be happy about that name,” Peggy told him.

“Even more perfect.” Tony hopped off the stool. “If he even notices.”

“Tony, your father does try,” Peggy attempted.

“Sure he does,” Tony grumbled.

“I know you don’t believe me, Tony, but your father wasn’t always this way.” Peggy reached out and hugged him, holding him tightly until he squirmed away. “Now shall we see what we can do to make Dummy less likely to injure you?”

Happier now, Tony reached for his screwdriver and showed Peggy what to do to help him with the bot. The two spent the next few hours happily tinkering. Peggy might not understand everything Tony could do, but she could hold tools for him and help guide things. Besides it was nice for Tony to have company, even if it was adult company.
