Captain America, Steve/Any, someone suggests 'nudist beach' for his list

Spoilers for Captain America 2

“So how are you doing on your list?” Darcy asked as she settled on the couch next to Steve.

“I’ve been a little busy,” Steve pointed out.

“What? Taking down Hydra?” She scoffed. “That doesn’t take you long at all. You and Black Widow totally kicked ass.”

“I appreciate the confidence,” he said, “but…” He shook his head. “I don’t want to talk about it right now. Especially since it still doesn’t feel finished.” Looking over at her, he asked, “What are you doing?”

Darcy tilted her laptop so he could see it. “Googling.” At Steve’s look, she explained, “Internet search engine… And you totally already knew that, didn’t you?”

“I did. I was more interested in what you’re… googling?”

“I thought you might like some help with your list. Since you’ve been so busy,” she said. “I know Sam got you the Troubleman soundtrack, but I thought I could help you find some of the other things on the list.”

“You don’t have to do that,” he told her.

“I know. But…” she shrugged, “my other choice was to work in the lab by myself since Jane is moping around. Thor had to go back to Asgard for something. Tony’s got us all on lockdown for the foreseeable future.”

Steve wrapped his arm around her shoulders at those words. “I can’t say I want to argue with that. I’m glad you’ve been safe these last few days.”

“When I saw the news…” she started. “And they announced you were a fugitive. I didn’t know what to do. I mean. You? Truth, justice, and the American way.” She scoffed again. “No way.”

Steve held her against his side, watching as she continued to work her way through the pages on the screen. “So what did you find?”

“I found information on some of the history things on your list,” she commented, snuggling against him. “Figured we could look through them later if you wanted. And JARVIS is the ultimate and has managed to locate samplings of all the television and movies that you’ve got. And we’ll get you some more when those are done.” She made a motion towards the kitchen. “Figured we could order in to check off Thai food.”

“You’ve been thinking a lot about this,” he commented.

“Lock. Down,” she reminded him. “The internet has been my only friend while you’ve been running around blowing things up.” She shrugged. “Well, not only friend, but you know what I mean. Once Jane and I got back, Tony put all of us into what was essentially protective custody. I think he was worried about what you would do if you came back and I… we… weren’t here.”

“I would have come after you,” Steve promised.

“Yeah. I know. But Tony.”

Steve laughed at the exasperation in her voice. “So what else did you find?” he asked, reaching over to change the view himself. “What’s this?” he asked, coming across a picture of a beach.

“That…” Darcy flicked the window so it minimized. “That was an idea I had, but then I thought better of it. And I forgot to close the window.”

“A beach would be nice,” he commented.

“We can do a beach, but that might be the wrong one,” she replied. “I don’t want to hear about how I corrupted a national icon.”

He raised an eyebrow at that. “You know I’m not as innocent as everyone seems to think I am.”

“Yeah, well, I’m well aware of that,” she replied. “But I still don’t want to hear about it.”

“So where is this beach?” he pressed. “Is it somewhere you think I won’t want to go?”

“It’s in Europe. Which okay, you might have bad memories of there, but no that’s not the reason,” she said. “I just had second thoughts after I wanted to add it to the list.”

“Darcy.” He turned so he could look her in the eye. “What’s wrong with the beach? What could have changed so much about a beach in seventy years?”

For a minute she just looked at him as if trying to decide whether or not to tell him, than she blurted out, “I’m pretty sure they didn’t have nudist beaches in the forties.”

“They do that?” he asked, clearly not thinking about it before voicing the question.

“I knew you wouldn’t like it,” she said. “That’s why I didn’t want to say anything.”

“But doesn’t the sand…”

Darcy favored him with a look. “I’m not sure if I’m offended that you think I know or that you asked me. I’ve never been. But you said you wanted to catch up and experience things. So I had a momentary lapse.”

“How about we just put a um regular beach on the list?” Steve suggested.

Darcy grinned as she realized the tips of his ears were turning red, whether from the suggestion he’d just made or the discussion of the alternative beach, she wasn’t sure. “You keep telling me you’re not innocent, but then you blush when suggesting we go to the beach,” she teased.

“I’ve seen pictures of what women wear for swimsuits,” he retorted. “I’m not sure I’m ready for that.”

She was still laughing five minutes later when Tony wandered into the room, clearly having just come up from the workshop. The billionaire took one look at the two of them, shook his head, and decided it was just better not to ask. Even if he really did want to know.
