Natasha didn’t look up as the doors to her quarters opened, knowing it could only be one person. “I thought you were leaving on a mission an hour ago,” she commented.

“They delayed the liftoff time,” Clint replied. “And I wanted to see you for a minute before you took off with Rogers.”

“You know I’m not running away with Rogers, right?” she asked, looking at the array of knives on the bed before her.

“Absolutely,” Clint replied, reaching out and twisting a finger in a lock of her hair. “But…”

“It’s fine, Clint.” She paused in her packing, turning to look at him. “Does this have to do with New Mexico?”

“Of course not,” he tried to brush it off. “I’m just not sure Rogers is the one to look after you.”

“I can look after myself,” she pointed out. “And I’m the best person to help him with the Winter Solider.”

Clint dropped down onto her bed, disrupting her careful arrangement of weapons and clothes. “Do you really think this guy is Rogers’s friend?” he asked, ignoring her look of annoyance at his disruption.

“Whether he is or isn’t, we need to track him down,” Natasha replied. “He attacked Director Fury and cannot be allowed to roam free to create more havoc. I shouldn’t be gone long.”

“Not really feeling like I need to protect Fury after everything,” Clint told her.

“He reinstated you,” Natasha said.

“After making me work my way back up from probationary,” Clint responded. “I’m going to stay at the Tower while you’re gone.”

“That’s probably a good choice,” she said. “Was there anything else?”

He dug his hand into his pocket, pulling out something. “I wanted you to have this.”

“You know we can’t have anything identifying on us when we’re on a missing,” Natasha said to him as he held the chain out to her.

“It’s small and discrete. And you won’t be undercover.” He shifted uncomfortably. “I just thought…”

Natasha held up the chain, letting the pendant dangle. “That you’d mark me?”

“Arrows are in right now,” he cracked. When she just glared at him, he tried to protest, “I didn’t mean it that way.”

“Clint, it’ll be fine. I won’t be gone that long.” She smiled at him. “And Rogers is an honorable man.”

Clint sighed, obviously trusting in her word. “Will you wear it?” he asked. “I know it’s not usual, but will you?”

“If it will make you happy,” she said, “but I might have to take it off.”

“I understand.”

Steve looked up as Natasha came out of her room, her hair still wet from the shower she’d just taken. “I think I might have an idea on where to look next,” he commented as she took a seat across from him.

“Why don’t we take a break for tonight?” she asked. “We’re both a bit beat-up and we could use some downtime. I’ve got calls in to some contacts and…”

Steve sat back in his chair. “I just don’t want to lose momentum.”

“We won’t.” Natasha absently reached up and moved her necklace, settling it against the base of her throat. “One night isn’t going to change it right now and we both need to sleep.”

“I just don’t want to lose him. If it is Bucky, something must be making him do all this.”

“You know we might not be able to bring him back,” Natasha pointed out.

“I don’t believe that,” said Steve. “I know Bucky’s still in there somewhere. Barton brought you out of the training.”

“I’d already started to break away,” she explained. “And I wasn’t in put in suspended animation for years on end. There might not be any of your friend left.”

Steve ran a hand through his hair, disarraying the careful style. “I still have to try.” He frowned as he looked down at his hands, then back up at her. “When did you start wearing a necklace?”

“I don’t normally,” she replied. “I just. It was a gift.”

His eyes narrowed. “From Barton,” he asked, although it wasn’t really phrased like a question.

Natasha raised an elegant eyebrow. “He wanted to be sure you were aware of the logistics of the situation.”

“I’m sure if it’s something Barton thought I needed to know, it was important.”

“Men. There is a reason you are so easily manipulated at times.” She unclipped the necklace and held it out to Steve, waiting until he took it from her. “Does the pendant look familiar?”

“I understood that it was an arrow, which is why I assumed it was from Barton. I’m just unclear what he’s trying to convey by marking you.”

“That he’s an ass?” Natasha suggested. “A possessive ass at that.” She shook her head at Steve’s expression. “Clint and I are… complicated. And I don’t mean just personally.”

Steve handed the necklace back. “I’m sure it’s not really any of my business as long as it doesn’t affect the team.”

“It never has before,” Natasha told him.

Things haven’t changed, even though they have, Steve thought as she clipped the necklace back around her neck. “Good for both of you,” he finally said.

She nodded. “Get some sleep, Captain. We’ll start looking for the Winter Soldier again bright and early.”
