Author's Note: Here’s another of the fic for Christmas. Hopefully it meets what was requested. :-)
Jules looked up as Winnie came into the briefing room, holding Sadie who was beginning to fuss a little. “I think she wants her mom,” Winnie said.
Sam got up, taking the baby from the dispatcher. “Are you giving Aunt Winnie a hard time?” he asked, bouncing his daughter a little. Sadie clutched at his jacket, chortling happily.
“It’s getting late,” Jules said. “We should get her home.”
The rest of the group took that as their cue, getting to their feet and exchanging hugs and good-byes. Most of them would see each other in the morning, but Greg would be starting at the Academy within the week and Sam had already taken control of Team Three.
As the younger members (some former, some current) of Team One cleared out of the briefing room, Greg and Ed settled back into their chairs. “It was a good run,” Ed commented as he looked out at the city.
“It was an outstanding run,” Greg corrected. “But all good things come to an end.”
“I don’t know. I think it’s more like we’re starting a new chapter on the next good thing,” Ed corrected. “The next generation.” He smiled. “Jules and Sam made a beautiful baby.”
“Yes they did. And they’ll have plenty of help with her and with anymore that come after her.”
“And our boys are growing… grown up. Which is hard to believe, but the evidence is there right before our eyes,” Ed added. “The years pass and things change, but not necessarily for the worse.”
“Did you need to say all those things in the speech?” Greg asked.
“I thought you liked my speech?”
“I didn’t say I disliked it, just…”
“Just…?”
The two men laughed at the lack of description in Greg’s protest. The former team leader sat back in his chair. “So this is it? I turn my team, our team, over to you and I slink off into the sunset to go teach at the academy.”
“I wouldn’t say ‘slink’. I think you can walk proudly into the academy. And you can certainly kick the ass of most of those trainees.”
The two friends chuckled at Ed’s comment before Greg pushed his chair back. “You should get home to your wife. I am going to get some rest before I have to face the trainees.”
For a minute they stood, almost awkwardly looking at each other, too many years between them. Then at the same moment, they stepped forward, embracing. “Stay safe,” Ed said.
“Keep the peace,” Greg replied.
Together, for the last time, they walked out of the barn.
Author's Note: So I hope I will have another story for you tomorrow, but this was my last finished story and I still have to write the others. And I have plans tomorrow. So I don't know when Day Eight, Nine, Ten, Eleven, or Twelve will be posted, but I WILL finish these and get them all up. I promise!
