Author's Note: I know that according to AoS the Avengers (and therefore Clint and Natasha) don’t know that Coulson is alive, but in this verse they already knew before the show came out; so I’ve just kinda re-written the world a little so they know but SHIELD doesn’t know they know. And of course what the terrible two know, their little girl knows. Thanks very much to illfindmyway for stepping in as a beta when whogeek was unable to do her normal job. I couldn't do this without these two fabulous ladies :-)

One Year after the Attempted Chitauri Invasion

Skye stopped short as she came through the doors from the science lab, staring at the red-headed child standing unconcernedly on the ramp that led out of the bus. “Um, guys,” she called over her shoulder, “there’s a child standing in the vehicle bay.” When no one answered her immediately, she demanded, “Why is there a child standing in the vehicle bay?”

“There’s a what?” Ward asked as he came through the same door. He also stopped short. “That is a child.”

“No kidding, Ward, but what’s she doing here? And how in hell did she get here?”

“And why is she dressed like a SHIELD sniper?” Ward asked.

Skye tilted her head. “She is?”

“Yeah.” Ward indicated the girl who was staring stonily at them. “Cargo pants, combat boots, black t-shirt. The only thing missing is the combat vest.”

“I didn’t know they made combat boots that small,” Skye said.

“They don’t. Her dad had them made special,” Simmons said from behind them.

Fitz waved at her. “Hi, plodag.” A grin broke out at the greeting and she waved back, although she still didn’t speak. He beckoned her forward. “Come here.”

She darted across the open space, dodging both Skye and Ward, and even if they had thought quickly enough, they wouldn’t have been able to grab her. She wrapped her arms around Fitz’s waist, hugging him tightly. Releasing him, she turned her attention to Simmons, hugging her as she asked, “Where are your mom and dad?”

The little girl shrugged. “Dunno.”

“Her parents just left her here?” Skye demanded.

“Oh they knew she was safe,” Simmons explained. “No one’s gonna harm her.” She brushed a hand down the little girl’s hair. “Agent Ward, Skye, meet Ariana Barton.”

Barton as in Clint Barton?!” Ward demanded as Simmons scooped Ariana up, settling the little girl on her hip.

“Yup,” Simmons confirmed. “Which means her parents are probably around here somewhere. Or at least one of them.” She turned to Ariana who had wrapped her arms around the science geek’s neck. “You wanna go find Coulson?”

The little girl grinned. “Uncle Coulson’s here?!” She kicked her legs. “Yes! Yes. Yes. Yes!”

“All right then.” Simmons turned. “Fitz, you coming?”

“Yup. Right behind you.”

“Uncle Coulson?” Ward questioned.

“Her parents?” Skye replied. “I’m almost afraid to ask who her mother is.”

“Considering who her father is? I kinda am too,” Ward answered.

“Who is her father?” Skye asked. “Since you seemed to recognize the name.”

“Really? Clint Barton? Hawkeye the World’s Greatest Marksman?” Ward questioned.

“You’re shitting me,” Skye said. “You’re saying that little girl is the daughter of the World’s Greatest Marksman?” There was an almost sarcastic lilt to the words.

“Um, apparently,” Ward answered. “But I have no idea who her…”

“Where’s Ariana?” a male voice asked. Skye and Ward spun around to see the man wearing an outfit not unlike Ariana’s and a red-headed woman beside him. The woman had a knife in one hand that she kept flicking open and closed as she clearly waited for an answer. When nothing was forth-coming, the man repeated, “Where’s Ariana?”

“Um, Fitz. FitzSimmons. They took her. Said something about seeing Coulson?” Skye said.

The woman said something in another language in response to that and the man flashed a brief grin. “Oh, well that’s fine. FitzSimmons would take care of her until they got to Coulson.”

“Was that Russian?” Ward asked, staring at the red-headed woman.

“Da,” the woman said with a grin that wasn’t nearly as friendly as the man’s.

“Okay then,” Ward said.

“Barton, are you terrorizing my team?” a much more familiar voice said from up above them.

“Not me this time, sir,” the man, Barton, called back. “But I can’t speak for Tasha.” He turned to see Coulson standing above them. “You wouldn’t happen to know where my daughter is, would you?”

“FitzSimmons are entertaining her with their drones in the main room. Was there a particular reason you thought it was a good idea to leave her alone?”

Barton shrugged. “Who’s gonna mess with our little girl?”

“Not everyone knows she’s your daughter,” Coulson pointed out. “Especially my new team.”

“She’s still safe, Coulson, there’s plenty of people on board who know who she is,” Barton replied. “FitzSimmons is here. And you and May. She’s fine.”

“We wouldn’t leave her completely undefended, Coulson,” Natasha spoke for the first time. “One of us was watching her until FitzSimmons had her. They might not be able to protect her as we would, but they wouldn’t put her in harm’s way.”

Coulson frowned down at them. “And you think leaving her alone with FitzSimmons is a safer idea?”

“You said they’re playing with the drones?” Clint asked.

“When I left they were,” Coulson replied.

Clint shrugged. “Then the only real danger is her begging to be allowed to take one home.”

Skye raised a hand. “Can we go back to the part where you’re Hawkeye and that was your daughter?”

“Why is that so hard to believe?” Clint asked Natasha.

“Because you are still a child yourself?” she questioned.

Coulson broke in before they could start bickering for real. “Perhaps we should go see what your daughter is doing?”

Looking at Natasha, Clint agreed, “Yeah. Probably.”

“Ward. Skye. If you’d join us,” Coulson invited.

“Oh definitely.” Skye barely gave the two operatives a chance to walk past her before she was following them towards the main room.

Natasha glared over her shoulder at the girl who was following too closely before climbing the last few steps to see Ariana dancing around the main room; the drones of the science twins whirling around her. She squealed with glee as one of them just skimmed her fingertips.

“Somehow I don’t think that’s why you were given the approval for the drone project,” Coulson said mildly.

Fitz and Simmons both jumped at the sound of his voice. Simmons quickly turned off the music as Fitz keyed a command into the pad. “Uncle Coulson!” Ariana yelled happily.

“Sorry, sir. We didn’t mean any harm. It was just a bit of fun.” FitzSimmons’s words overlapped each other as they tried to explain what was going on.

“Relax, Heckle and Jeckle, he’s teasing,” Clint said.

Coulson cocked an eyebrow at Clint’s comment. “Are you sure?”

“Considering my daughter’s trying to climb you and you aren’t dissuading her. I really don’t think you’re mad,” Clint replied.

Ariana gave up her attempts to climb into Coulson’s arms and tugged on his suit jacket. “Uncle Coulson, if FitzSimmons says it’s okay, can I take one of the drones home? Pleeeaase? Maybe Happy? Or Bashful?”

Before Coulson could answer, Fitz knelt down, motioning for Ariana to come over to him. “Plodag, you know I would love to give you one of the dwarfs. But they’re the seven dwarfs for a reason, we can’t split them up. If it’s okay with your ma and da, I’ll see what we can do about building you your own drone, okay?”

Ariana threw her arms around his neck. “Thank you! Daddy, I can have one, right?”

“Within reason, Button,” Clint said before Natasha could respond.

“We’ll discuss it,” Natasha said. “All of us.”

“I see she’s still got everyone but you, Natasha, wrapped around her little fingers,” May commented.

“Melinda,” Natasha said. The two women met halfway across the open space, clasping arms, before Ariana ran over to hug May around the waist.

The normally stoic agent smiled as she leaned down, lifting the little girl up, and hugging her closely. “Are you enjoying your new home, my little spider?” she asked.

“We have a talking house!” Ariana exclaimed, leaning back so she could see May.

“Um, why did you call her a little spider?” Skye asked, drawing everyone’s attention. “I mean other than the fact that she keeps attempting to climb everyone.”

Natasha exchanged looks with May. “Is she always this nosy?”

“Unfortunately this is mild,” May replied. “Ariana, why are you my little spider?”

“’Cause my mommy is a big spider!” Ariana chirruped.

“And what spider is your mommy?” May prompted.

“She’s the Black Widow!”

A squeak came from behind them and the three turned around to see Ward staring at the group. “You’re the Black Widow?” he asked. “You’re Natasha Romanov?”

“Were you expecting someone bigger?” she asked.

“I don’t. No. I.” He stepped forward, offering his hand. “It’s an honor to meet you.”

Natasha raised an eyebrow at the sight of his hand, watching until he dropped it, looking at her awkwardly. “I’m just an agent.”

“You’re the Black Widow,” Ward almost gushed.

“Yeah, we’re still working on his people skills,” May deadpanned.

“He has people skills?” Clint asked. He held his arms out. “Button.”

With a giggle, Ariana ran across the room and into his body, almost launching herself into her father’s arms. Clint swung her up and onto his shoulders, smiling as she laughed gleefully. She said something in Russian, causing Clint to smile broadly.

Natasha just shook her head. “Don’t encourage her, Barton.”

“I totally don’t encourage her,” Clint protested.

“You absolutely do,” May and Coulson said in unison.

“Button, they’re ganging up on me,” Clint said, attempting to twist to look up at Ariana.

“Don’t…”Natasha started before stopping as Ariana grabbed handfuls of Clint’s hair to keep her seat. A smile flicked across Natasha’s face at his wince.

“Was there a particular reason you two came?” Coulson asked as Ariana wiggled around until Clint put her down. “Other than to terrorize my team?”

“Ariana wanted to see her Uncle Coulson,” Natasha answered. “And you know Clint can’t tell her no. I thought it was better for him not to be set loose on your team by himself.”

“That’s probably for the best,” Coulson replied. “Were you followed?”

Natasha favored him with a look that clearly conveyed her opinion of that question. “I am still unclear why they can’t know where you are, but they have no idea where we went today.”

“Hey, we learned from the best,” Clint pointed out.

Coulson didn’t dignify that with a reply, instead saying, “While I’m glad to see Ariana and the two of you, we’re going to have to head out soon.”

“We’ll head out then,” Natasha said. “And get out of your way. Ariana, go say good-bye.”

Ariana darted around the room; hugging FitzSimmons first before ducking around Ward to hug May and then crawling under a table to avoid Skye and get to Coulson. “No, she’s not your daughter at all, Clint,” May deadpanned.

Clint scooped Ariana up as she made it back to him. “Why does everyone treat it like this is so surprising?” he asked.

“It’s just not something anyone expects from you, Barton,” Coulson said.

“Thanks. I think,” Clint said. “So you’ll keep us updated?”

“I have a feeling I’ll hear about unscheduled forays into the database if I don’t,” Coulson replied. “Try to let me know you’re dropping by next time. It saves on the wear and tear of field agents. I know you like playing with junior agents, but these field agents are on the same level as you.”

“We’ll keep that in mind,” Natasha put in before Clint could open his mouth.

Before anyone else could say anything, a tone went off. May turned, answering he communicator. “Yes… Right away… Understood.” She turned back towards the group when she clicked off. “That was our clearance. Wheels up in ten.” She hurried off towards the cockpit.

“That’s our cue,” Natasha said, motioning for Clint to precede her.

In the flurry of the two Avengers gathering up Ariana and leaving and the SHIELD team locking down everything for take-off, Skye didn’t realize one very important thing until they were in the air and speeding towards their newest crisis.

How had Clint and Natasha known Coulson was alive?
