Title: Recruits
Characters: Clint Barton, Natasha Romanov, Bruce Banner, Tony Stark, Thor, Pepper Potts, Phil Coulson, Steve Rogers, Will Brandt, Ethan Hunt
Fandom: Mission Impossible 4, Avengers 2012
Series: Double Trouble
Written For:
Prompt: SHIELD Recruitment
Summary: Shield: throwing people together who really shouldn't work together but somehow do
Rating: PG-13 (although I think all the swearing is in a foreign language)
Spoilers: This is an outtake from my longer story Family Bonding
Warnings: mostly for my stories
Disclaimer: No one recognizable belongs to me. Not making any money off of this.
Author's Note: Whogeek and I were having a discussion about recruitment and how Ethan would feel about finding out how everyone ended up working for SHIELD or with SHIELD. And then this happened. It totally didn’t work with the longer story…although it takes place while they’re all in NYC. And Benji and Jane are totally lurking here…they just didn’t have anything to say.
“Explain to me why with your skills IMF didn’t try to recruit you, Clint,” Ethan commented from where he was seated across the room.
Clint looked up from the world map that comprised the game board for the game he was playing with Natasha and Will. “They tend to frown on recruiting criminals.”
“So then how did you end up with S.H.I.E.L.D.?” Ethan questioned.
Clint finished his move, grinning as Will swore in response, shoving gently at his shoulder. Flicking his eyes to Ethan, he answered, “Coulson shot me.” After a brief pause, he added, “And then he threw me in jail.”
“He did get you back out again,” Will pointed out, making his own move.
“Sukin syn!” Natasha swore as she learned forward to get a better look at the board. She sat back and glared at the cousins. “You two are ganging up on me!”
“Who us, Tasha?” Clint asked, attempting to look innocent.
“Da, vui.” Natasha poked him in the chest.
“So do you yield?” Will asked.
Natasha crossed her arms, glaring at the board, and then the two cousins. “Apparently I don’t have a choice since you two took over the world!”
“Wasn’t that the point?” Will asked.
“I think the problem is normally she and I do this to everyone else,” Clint said as he ducked to avoid the punch Natasha threw at him. He grinned as if the sheer normalcy reassured him. When she settled back, he leaned against her, brushing her red hair back. “You’re still my partner.”
“Is this usual?” Ethan asked, drawing their attention back to him. “For S.H.I.E.L.D. to recruit with violence and from a normally unsuitable pool?”
“Not always,” Steve admitted, getting involved with the conversation, “but they believe in using the best available resources and not squandering people just because they seem unsuitable.”
“And they like to use… unique recruiting methods,” Natasha admitted. “Clint had a kill order on me when he convinced me to change sides.”
“Best decision of my life to go against orders,” Clint said with a smirk. “Well, second best. Taking Coulson’s offer was definitely one of my better ideas.”
“Not jumping off a building would always be a good decision,” Will commented.
“But it’s so much fun!” Clint responded.
When the boys moved towards each other, Natasha gripped the back of Clint’s shirt. “Nyet,” she snapped at him.
Clint pouted at her, but settled back down. “You spoil half my fun, Tasha.”
“You would hate yourself later,” she told him.
“Sad but true,” he admitted.
“So shot and thrown in jail.” Ethan pointed at Clint. “Escaped a kill order.” He swung his finger to Natasha. “How did the rest of you end up with S.H.I.E.L.D.?”
Tony raised his glass, looking up from the tablet he had been tapping at as the group worked around him. “Actually they didn’t want me. They just didn’t have a choice. Without me? They don’t have Iron Man.”
Steve favored him with a look, but it didn’t faze Tony any more than it normally did, before answering Ethan, “A survey group discovered the ship I crashed in the Artic and defrosted me. My… metabolism had kept me alive in the ice.”
Ethan looked at them in awe as he tried to piece together what they were telling him. “Do you all have stories like that?” he asked.
Bruce smiled peacefully. “I was persuaded. Gently. And then I chose to come back. Tony offered me a place and protection. Technically I don’t work for S.H.I.E.L.D., I independently contract for both them and Stark Enterprises.”
“I was banished by my father and landed in a place known as New Mexico where I met my Lady Jane and her lady in arms Darcy,” Thor boomed.
“Yes, and then you broke into our site and beat up an entire unit of Special Forces,” Clint pointed out. “Although I have to admit, I am really glad I didn’t end up shooting you. Although it was pretty depressing when you couldn’t lift Mjolnir after all that effort you went through to get to it.” Clint flicked the dice he’d been playing with towards Will, who caught it easily, and glared at his cousin. “I was totally rooting for ya, big guy,” he finished.
“I am honored that I had your support, even then, Friend Clint,” Thor said, with a slight bow of his head.
Ethan shook his head, looking at all of them. “And I thought IMF agents were crazy. I think I’m actually glad I work for IMF and not S.H.I.E.L.D.”
“As are we, Agent Hunt,” Coulson said from behind them. “As are we.”
Clint tilted his head back so he could look at Coulson over the back of the couch. “Hey, boss. Don’t tell me we forgot a meeting.”
“No, you didn’t, Barton. I just brought some paperwork by for Ms. Potts and thought I’d make sure you weren’t plotting too much mayhem with your guests,” Coulson replied.
“Aw, how much trouble do you think we could get in?” Clint asked.
“I’ve known you for over ten years,” Coulson stated. “I know how much trouble you can get into.”
“I really need to talk to Pepper about our security measures,” Tony muttered.
“Our security measures are just fine,” Pepper said as she walked into the common room and took the tablet from Coulson. “Phil is a friend.”
Ethan tilted his head at them as Coulson and Pepper walked from the room, talking quietly, “So essentially it’s S.H.I.E.L.D.: recruitment by force as the poster tag line?”
