Disclaimer: No one recognizable belongs to me, sooo not making any money off this.
Author's Note: So way back when…I originally posted the first half of this without a title and totally intending to do a follow-up. And then…life. And I don’t even remember what happened to my notes. At this point…I figure no one remembers me even writing this and I added a title and wow, I wrote the follow-up (dude I wrote the original in 2010). So fail on actually doing a timely fix it for these two, but at least I did fix them. Who knows, two years from now they might have the baby—no that does not mean I plan to actually write the story of them having the baby. That might break my brain. I’m gonna go play with Clint or Matt or someone else now.
Part One
Slowly Hatter eased the door open, hoping he wasn’t going to wake Alice. He still wasn’t sure what to think of the news she’d dropped on him earlier. They’d never discussed children and frankly he hadn’t thought it would be an issue. As far as he knew, denizens of Wonderland couldn’t have children with Oysters.
Clearly that thinking was wrong.
“Hatter?” Alice sat up from where she’d apparently been resting on the couch, turning to face the door. “Is that you?”
“Um. Depends?”
“On. What?” she asked.
“How much trouble I’m in?”
“Well, you came back. That’s always a good thing.”
“And I brought presents?”
Alice sighed. “You don’t actually have to buy me something when you think you screw up.”
“But…” He sat down on the edge of the couch, finding space beside her feet. “Well, I did. So you can either accept them or tell me to get out.”
She put her hand behind his neck, pulling him forward, and kissing him. “You mad man. Why did you run away?”
“It’s a…a baby. I mean. Us? You said it. I’m a mad man. I shouldn’t be responsible for a baby.”
Resting her forehead against his, she told him, “You’re my mad man. And it’ll be fine. We’ll probably make mistakes, but I don’t think we’ll damage the baby unduly.”
“That really wasn’t what I was worried about. I didn’t even know you could get pregnant. I mean. I didn’t know an Oyster and a Wonderlander could have a baby. What is our baby going to look like?”
“Well, if it’s a little boy, I hope he’ll look like you.” She turned herself around so she could tuck herself up against him, Hatter moving to accommodate her. “I’d love a miniature little Hatter. Don’t worry though; don’t count your chickens before they’re hatched.”
He jerked upright. “Chickens?! Is that a possibility?!”
“Oh, Hatter, no.” Alice pulled him back. “It’s just a saying. It means don’t borrow trouble. Now I think you said something about presents?”
“Oh. Um. Right. Presents.” Hatter rummaged around in the pockets of his coat for a minute, finally shifting her over so he could get up to retrieve the bag he’d set down when he’d joined her on the couch. Sitting back down, he held it out to her. “I got you tea and chocolate and biscuits. And…” He dug through his pocket again, pulling out a small box. “This.”
Alice took a moment to exclaim over the goodies he’d fetched; her favorite tea and cookies and chocolate that was more expensive than she’d purchase for herself. Then she turned her attention to the box. It wasn’t small enough to be a ring box, but she couldn’t figure out what else Hatter would have bought her. “What is this?”
For a minute Hatter actually looked awkward, then he nudged the box closer to Alice. “I can’t. It’s.” He sighed, resting his head against hers for a minute. “It’s a gift.”
“I can see that, Hatter.” Alice turned the box over in her hands, not yet opening it. “Why?”
“You’re going to have my child.” He placed his hand gently against her stomach. “You’re giving me a wonderful gift. This is…I have to give you something in return.”
Alice tilted her head, studying him for a minute. “Is this a Wonderland thing?”
“Maybe? Would that be a bad thing?”
Leaning forward, she kissed him. “No. Of course not.” She started to open the box, then paused. “It’s not alive, is it? And it’s not going to eat me, right?”
Hatter looked horrified at the question. “No! A course not! It’s just a gift, Alice. Please.”
“I do trust you,” she assured him as she carefully pried the lid off the box. When she had it open, she stared at the silver pendant inside for a minute. “Oh, Hatter,” she breathed.
“Is that a bad ‘Hatter’?” he asked fearfully. “I wanted…I couldn’t get you anything from Wonderland so I thought maybe something that might remind you of Wonderland. Of Charlie. Would be okay? I can take it back.” He reached for the box.
“You will not,” she informed him, holding the box out of reach. “In fact, you’ll put it on me. I love it. And I love you.” She lifted the pendant, a small knight mounted on a horse, from its bed of cotton and held it out to him. “Put it on me?”
“Yeah.” He fumbled with the clasp for a minute. “A course.” As she swept her hair aside, he settled the necklace into place and pressed a kiss to the back of her neck after securing it. “Beautiful,” he whispered against her skin. Reaching around her as she leaned back against him, he rested his hands on her midsection.
Alice hummed in contentment. “Hatter?” she questioned after a minute, getting a soft ‘hmm’ in response. “This would be much more comfortable in bed.”
“Absolutely,” he agreed. “Oh. That means we have to move?”
She laughed at the disappointment in his voice. “Yes, it does.” Getting to her feet, she tugged on his hands until he followed her urgings. Prodding him, she got him moving towards their bedroom.
Snuggling down in the quilts, Alice watched as Hatter moved confidently around their room. He was much more at ease here now and she no longer feared that he would disappear as soon as she closed her eyes. Now she ran her hand across his bare chest as he gathered her close and wrapped his arms around her. “I’m sorry I ran, Alice.”
“You came back. That’s all I can ask of you,” she replied. She gripped his hand where it rested on her stomach. “You came back.”
