It's not so much that they wanted to leave him behind as they were willing to do it if that was what he wanted them to do. His mom was trying to give him options. She was looking at it's his senior year and he's never lived anywhere else so she didn't think he'd want to leave all his friends. It would have hurt them painfully if he'd decided to stay behind so they were really glad he didn't.
Does that make more sense now?
But yay that now we know how he ended up in Hawaii! I have to remember my readers aren't psychic and even if I know how events played out...they don't. :-)
Oh, and also? I could totally hear a mother's voice screaming his name!! Yeah...I think though that everyone that has survived being a teen has heard that voice! Oh absolutely. I hope she didn't come across as a harridan though...because she isn't...just an overwhelmed mother. Who didn't know where her son was...and was a little annoyed with him.
